We have an exciting opportunity for an ambitious experienced Engineer to join a leading Temporary Works Engineering Centre in Manchester.

Supporting the companies plant hire business, we utilise proprietary and bespoke systems to provide safe, efficient & innovative temporary works solutions for ground shoring and structural support applications. Boasting a diverse team of experienced Civil, Structural & Mechanical engineers, we adopt a collaborative approach to development ensuring that our products and systems are at the forefront of the industry. We operate through a digital model with all our engineering drawings provided in 3D Autodesk Revit.

We add real value to our customers projects by being on hand to provide technical support on site and through early engagement, embracing the use of digital technologies to achieve this. We actively contribute to the continuous development of temporary works methods and best practice through playing a leading role in the Temporary Works Forum (TwF) and the Shoring Technology Interest Group (STIG) in addition to raising temporary works awareness through the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE).

The role

As a Senior Engineer you will help manage and oversee the daily design workload, working closely with the Regional Sales Managers across the UK. You will provide technical guidance to the Sales team, whilst supporting the internal design team including Graduate Engineers, Design Engineers and Technicians. You will also support the Engineering Manager and Chief Engineer with department efficiency, training, recruitment, offline projects and assist with bespoke engineering projects when required.

Reporting to the Engineering Manager and Chief Engineer, your responsibilities will be split as follows:

Main Activities

  • Manage the delivery of the core design workload
  • Managing your own design workload as well as others, contributing to the smooth and efficient operation of the department
  • Production of TW’s designs and drawings on a day-to-day basis to satisfy customer demand (CAT 2-3 in accordance with BS5975:2019)
  • Checking designs/drawings (CAT 2 in accordance with BS5975:2019)
  • Identify training requirements with Graduate Engineers / Design Engineers within their job role and implement adequate training plan
  • Actively assist with the training of engineering staff
  • Assist the Engineering Management team as required
  • To produce “one-off” project work as directed by the Engineering Management team / Directors
  • Provide technical support to the sales team / customers (project and business related)

Further Activities

  • To lead and assist with the ongoing development / delivery of graduate training programmes
  • Coordinate with Regional Sales teams to organise project specific site support / experience for all members of the design team
  • Identify training requirements with Graduate Engineers / Design Engineers and communicate these to the Engineering management team
  • Actively contribute to internal senior engineering meetings & quarterly team meetings
  • Supporting the sales team at regional / national construction events / customer meetings

The ideal candidate

This role would suit an experienced engineer with demonstrable technical & commercial experience with respect to structural & geotechnical design, with a sound understanding of temporary works, construction processes / activities and applicable codes of practice. The candidate must possess the following:

  • Minimum BSc / BEng in Civil / Structural Engineering
  • Experience in Structural /Geotechnical design
  • Experience in temporary works
  • The ability to apply independent engineering judgement to solutions
  • Good understanding of CDM 2015
  • Working knowledge of Structural Design Software’s
  • 2D CAD design experience

It would be preferable if the candidate possesses experience with the following but not essential:

  • Thorough understanding of embedded retaining wall design
  • Experience of industry standard retaining wall design software (CADS Piled Wall Suite, WALLAP)
  • Design of steel to concrete connections
  • Experience of modelling structures in 2D / 3D using applicable software (Masterseries)
  • Latest drafting software (Autodesk Revit)

The ideal candidate should be close to or have achieved a minimum IEng professional recognition with the ICE / IStructE, however we operate an ICE Company Approved Training Scheme and boast an incredible track record in supporting our engineering staff to achieve professional qualifications. The candidate must therefore be keen to complete their professional qualifications from the outset.

The successful candidate will be working within a 35 strong, busy engineering department. You will be provided with comprehensive training to ensure you can liaise and maintain effective working relationships with customers, colleagues, operational teams, and senior managers, taking full technical responsibility for all your projects.
