Job Description
To act as a Senior Operational Telecoms Designer within our dedicated Telecoms team. The post holder will undertake the production of Operational Telecoms design as part of the dedicated Telecoms design team, as well as support their and other teams with design related activities. This role will involve the specification, development and supporting our customers to a right first time approach.
With a strong understanding of the technical and business aspects of railway operational telecoms, the Senior Telecoms Designer will participate in multi-disciplinary project teams, providing technical support to the discipline in terms of production and mentoring where required. Support the Telecoms Design Manager / Associate Director and other members of the team with additional duties as required such as, progress/programme reporting, tendering new works, production of guidance notes etc.
Engagement with other staff necessary to discharge these duties will be as follows:
- Project and Quality Delivery: Project Manager, CRE
- Staff Development: Professional Head of Discipline & Telecoms Design Manager
- Client Engagement: Telecoms Design Manager, Work Winning team, Project Manager
- Resource Management: Project Manager, Telecoms Design Manager, CRE
- Cross Business Line: Professional Head of Discipline & Telecoms Design Manager
Project and Quality Delivery/Staff Development
- Produce deliverables in accordance with client and governance requirements for Operational Telecoms and associated projects
- Design and verify Operational Telecoms projects and to deliver to defined timescales
- Bid preparation to support tendering of new works
- Mentor junior members of the Telecoms discipline
- Maintain knowledge of current practices, processes, standards and emerging technologies in relation to the Telecoms discipline
- Produce and verify Operational Telecoms designs and documentation at a consistent and acceptable level of quality
- Produce and verify Operational Telecoms designs and documentation at a consistent and acceptable level of quality
- Partake in lessons learned reviews and contribute to a culture of continuous improvement
- Ensure that the technical processes and procedures for the delivery of discipline outputs are followed
- Ensure that all skills and technical competence supporting documentation is kept up to date, e.g. CPD log, Authority to Work, Company CV, mandatory training etc.
- Work closely with Design Manager / Associate Director to support them with all appropriate tasks
- Maintain and develop good relationships with internal and external customers, industry associations, suppliers and Partners

- Promote health and safety best practice to Discipline teams though regular team briefs
- Ensure that procedures and systems are in place so that all projects are undertaken in a safe manner and project designs are compliant with health and safety legislation.
- Taking an active part in monthly HSQE meetings through sharing relevant health & safety information with others and identifying and prioritising HSQE issues that affect rail and the wider business.
- Reporting on unforeseen risks that may emerge during the course of their work using the appropriate systems
- Identify and manage risks throughout the design process and project lifecycle
Qualifications
- Experience of delivering and reviewing Telecoms design as part of multi-disciplinary rail systems projects for Operational Telecoms.
- A strong design and understanding of the following areas,
- Operational Telecoms systems of all generation
- Experience working with NRT and TENE
Preferential:
- IP Networking, Voice over IP, CUCM and other related technologies
- Commitment to professional development and retaining the highest standard of Telecoms design technical skills
- The ability to be able to work in a number of differing consultancy environments and situations across the project lifecycle
- Maintain good communication and cooperation with all project team members, with the ability to communicate at all levels and the demonstrated ability to have a senior role within a team
- Understanding and experience of working within project budgets whilst maintaining the delivery of high-quality outputs
- Commitment to delivery to internal and external clients, with the view towards timeliness, reliability, safety and accuracy of completed tasks
- Experienced in the use of all MS Office packages
- Understanding of CDM regulations
- Understanding of and participation in CSM, including Telecoms-specific risks and hazards
- Experienced in the use of Bentley MicroStation
- Experience of lineside and station surveys
Beneficial:
- Holder of IRSE 2.1.115v4 Telecoms Designer license
- Institution membership; IRSE, IET etc
- Professional registration: IEng, CEng etc
- Ability to act as CRE under mentorship
- Personal Track Safety (PTS) holder
- Engineering qualification; Degree, HND, HNC etc
- Experienced in the use of common data environments such ProjectWise
- Able to lead lineside and station surveys with appropriate protection staff
