The Institution of Railway Operators is the industry’s custodian of best practice in operational management, and thereby provides a focus for raising standards and enhancing the professional standing of those directly involved in the safe and reliable operation of railways. In addition, it provides a nationally recognised and transferable qualification for all its members.

Membership of the Institution provides:
* Individual professional development and planning
* An Education programme in the theory and practice of railway operational management
* Conferences, training courses, exhibitions, meetings, seminars and lectures
* A network of industry professionals 
* A forum for discussion and the exchange of information

The Institution is managed through a series of Area Councils whose purpose is to:

* Promote the aim of the Institution and take responsibility for the recruiting of new members
* Arrange meetings and visits
* Facilitate mentoring of individuals through the educational programme
* Arrange workshops and seminars as part of the educational process

Members below the age of 35 of any membership grade are able to join the IRO Young Professionals group, which promotes active networking, further information can be obtained from their website www.iroyoungprofessionals.org.uk.
