Division Description
Thales?s Rail Signalling group has a worldwide presence, with approximately 3,000 people delivering signalling solutions to over 100 different customers in more than 50 countries.
Primary Purpose of the Role
Reporting to the Engineering Manager, Products and Systems the Software Systems Architect will support the development and delivery of technical market strategies for Thales Transportation Systems? Rail Signalling Solutions business segment, with particular emphasis on the software element of the strategy.
The development of the technical market strategies will take account of the UK specific market requirements, the products and systems available throughout Thales Transportation Systems world-wide and their respective development route maps, and will be agreed upon by the Engineering Manager, Products and Systems.

Key Tasks
The Software Systems Architect will support the development of investment cases together with Business Development and, where funding is approved, for assisting in any respective software-related product localisation, product adaptation, product introduction and/or product development programmes.
The Software Systems Architect will act as a software technical lead, responsible for the delivery of software technical solutions and software strategies to the bids being delivered by Thales Transportation Systems. Where a bid is successful, the Software Systems Architect will provide technical support and leadership to ensure accurate implementation of the software technical solution by the Programme Team.
The Software Systems Architect will be support the Engineering Manager, Products and Systems with the development of the company?s technical delivery capability in line with the technical market strategies, including technical and engineering resources and competencies, ways of working, processes, procedures, facilities and tools, with particular emphasis on software capability.
The Software Systems Architect will be required to develop an understanding of the products and systems available throughout Thales Transportation Systems world-wide and their respective development route maps, to a level that contributes to the definition and development of solutions applicable to the UK market.
The Software Systems Architect will attend and participate in Software Systems Architecting and Process Groups, within Thales Transportation Systems and Thales UK, investigating opportunities and solutions within this framework.
Key Responsibilities
· Development of software solutions in support of the delivery of key technical market strategies;
· Development of software solutions in support of the delivery of investment cases;
· Support to software-related product localisation, adaptation, introduction and development programmes;
· Delivery of software technical solutions to bids, acting as the software technical lead;
· Support the handover of technical solutions, from a software technical perspective, from bids to programmes, to the Programme Team;
· Support the development of the company?s technical delivery capability in line with the key technical market strategies, including definition of resources and competencies, ways of working, processes, procedures, facilities and tools, with particular emphasis on software capability;
· Attend and participate in Software Systems Engineering working groups within Thales Transportation Systems and Thales UK.

Competency Requirements
Education
· Degree qualified in a scientific, technical or engineering discipline;
Skills
· Ability to work collaboratively within an integrated team containing Systems and Hardware Systems expertise, strategically driven in a stimulating environment to meet stretched timescales;
· Proven software architecting track record in rail signalling systems and a good level of understanding of existing rail solutions and products;
· Familiar with of industry standards including IEC 61508 and EN50128;
· Proven experience in the development and delivery of high integrity (up to and including SIL-4) software solutions, concepts, engineering principals and processes;
Personality & Behaviours
· Strong technical communications at all levels;
· Technical and personnel leadership skills.
