Training Manager – Metro/Mainline/Tram/Parts & Modernisation


The Company

A global leader within the rail industry, they develop and market the most complete range of systems, equipment and services in the railway sector.

They manage entire transport systems, taking in rolling stock, signalling and infrastructure, and offer “turnkey” solutions. The company is a world leader in the high and very high speed train sector.

To support its growth in the UK, and in particular in the rolling stock maintenance sector, my client is recruiting a Training Manager within Traincare Services.


About the role


Work closely and in partnership with Operational Management, EHS, HR and Trainers/Assessors to develop a robust training and development functional and role based (maintenance, manufacturing and safety critical) competency assessment process.

Project manages all aspects of the identification of training need, design, delivery, assessment and verification processes for in-house job-related training and competency assessment.

Directly manages and coordinates the Assessors across the business, to develop a standard efficient and robust training (maintenance, manufacturing and safety critical) competency assessment process.

To identify cost effective ways to fully utilise internal training and reduce the cost of external training.

Direct reporting line to Head of Operations / Fleet Operations Manager / P&M Operations Director


Duties & Responsibilities


Delivery of KPIs against target. Consistent management of training interventions, systems and role based competency assessment processes, delivered in accordance with project plan to time and quality.

Delivery of training plan, against actual. Budgetary responsibility on planned versus actual and savings on external expenditure.

Production of regular project reports/recommendations on in-house training process/competency assessment from design, delivery to external accreditation/verification, if appropriate

Cost budget

Assess relevant training needs for staff individuals and organisation, in consultation with departmental heads, including assessment methods and measurement systems entailed.

Plan departmental/functional training budgets, forecast costs and delegate numbers as required by organisational planning and budgeting systems.

Recruit, manage and develop direct-reporting staff

Ensure in-house trainers deliver high quality, cost effective training interventions in line with customer and business requirements in accordance with rail legislation/regulations.

Develop and roll out competence based assessment scheme for all

Safety Critical staff

Ensure training and assessment processes are audit compliant

Represent the company at training/customer training audits

Stays informed as to relevant skill and qualifications levels required by staff for effective performance, and circulate requirements and relevant information to the organisation as appropriate.

Produce organisational strategy and plans to meet training and development needs, and manage training delivery, measurement and follow-up as necessary.

Design training courses and programmes necessary to meet training needs, or manage this activity via external provider(s).

Identify, select and manage external training and accreditation bodies, agencies and providers necessary to deliver required training to appropriate standards.

Plan and deliver training courses personally where necessary to augment that provided externally or internally by others.

Arrange for the maintenance of all necessary equipment and materials relating to the effective delivery and measurement of training.

To provide regular and timely updates/feedback and KPI's to relevant managers

Development/maintenance of training database/record keeping systems

Ensure all training activities and materials meet with relevant organisational and statutory policies, including health and safety, employment and equality laws.

Monitor and report on activities, costs, performance, etc. as required.

Benchmark and share best practice with other internal businesses and external companies, keeping abreast of new thinking on learning tools and technologies.

Develop self, and maintain knowledge in relevant field at all times.


About You


Excellent project management, organisational and planning skills

Qualified in Learning and Development, or equivalent proven experience in

L&D or adult education.

Trainer/Assessor & Verifier qualifications, eg. D33/34 A1/V1 or equivalent

Engineering qualification/background

Trainer/Teacher qualification/background

Knowledge of rail industry/group standards

People management/project management skills

Self motivated and customer focused
