Agent Orange! QTS Group

August 15th 2008

From their inception in 1990 QTS Group has grown and diversified into an organisation with an extensive skill base in the delivery of the following services:

  • Rail Operations
  • Environmental & Utility Services
  • Civil Engineering
  • Training
  • Vegetation Management
  • Plant Supply
  • Access Services
  • Air Curtain Destructors

The HQ is near Strathaven (Scotland) on the A71, 15 minutes from the M77 and M74 motorways. The company operates a national coverage. Investment in specialised machinery and innovative working methods enables QTS to fulfil their contractual responsibilities efficiently and effectively.

Road-rail vegetation management

The company operates an extensive fleet of plant and equipment, including the largest and most varied range of road-rail vegetation management units in the UK. The rail fleet is complemented by a large range of non-rail forestry equipment including 32”crane-fed, remote control whole tree chippers, 750bhp tracked mulchers, excavator mounted mulchers, tractor mounted mulchers, air burners, forwarders, crawler tractors and winch tractors.

Competency training

QTS employ a dedicated team of directly employed mechanical engineers based in workshops at the Scottish HQ. Operations in the field are complemented by a team of fully equipped mobile fitters. The company believes in directly employing experienced staff and maintains an ongoing programme of competency training through their ’in-house’ training school.

QTS hold a wide range of accreditations giving them ’Main Contractor’ status. They are competent and capable of carrying out project management of civil engineering, rail, arboriculture, municipal and environmental services. The Company holds (amongst others) a Network Rail Principal Contractors License; ISO 9000; ISO14000; ISO18000, Multiple Link-Up accreditations; Multiple Achilles Accreditations; IRATA (Trainer & Operator) and Construction Line.

QTS works with clients to minimise the risk of disruption caused by vegetation adjacent to overhead powerlines, railways, highways and public open spaces. They specialise in providing advice on all aspects relating to trees in urban, rural, utility and industrial settings.

Geotechnical vegetation management

Hydroseeding is the process of spraying a mix of seed, mulch, fertiliser and binder on to a substrate, which can vary from topsoil down to rock face. The technique is used where either the soil is too rough (i.e. very rocky) or too steep to cultivate and seed by conventional methods. Hydroseeding can turn the otherwise intractable clay cap on a landfill site into lush green grass.

QTS Group can provide the complete geotechnical vegetation management package. IRATA operatives are fully trained to NPTC forestry/arboriculture standards required to use chainsaws on ropes. Whether it is the removal of one problematic tree on a rock face, or the complete removal of all vegetation, soil and loose rock from major structures, QTS can provide the complete solution.

The railway never shuts. QTS Group rapid response teams are on call 24-7 to ensure that client’s infrastructure remains operational at all times, whatever the weather. There is the capability to mobilise specialist labour, plant and equipment at very short notice to minimise down-time. QTS has a reputation for responding to our clients’ requirements throughout the year. Common call-outs include: storm damaged trees, fatalities, and flooding.
