Chiltern’s New Wembley Depot Scores with Darling

September 8th 2005

Chiltern Railways’ new £20m depot at Wembley has been officially opened by Transport Secretary Alistair Darling.

Darling and Adrian Shooter at the depotMr Darling arrived on a train specially chartered for the occasion and was given a conducted tour of the new facilities before performing the opening ceremony.

The depot will help accommodate Chiltern’s expanding fleet of trains, which has grown by 70% since 1996 in order to meet a 75% increase in passenger journeys over the last ten years.

As well as storing trains the depot will be used for cleaning, refuelling and light maintenance. Work started in February last year after consultation with local residents to minimize any environmental impact.

The picture shows an artist’s impression of the view from Sherrans Farm open space, prior to demolition of the old Wembley Stadium, showing how their new depot discretely blends into the environment. The opening of the depot will allow Chiltern to develop two extra platforms at Marylebone station, where previously there were sidings for trains not in operation.
