Christmas bridge replacements

January 26th 2010

A team of Network Rail engineers worked around the clock over the Christmas weekend to replace the main railway bridge in Diss, Norfolk in just 72 hours. Spanning Victoria Road, the structure was approaching the end of its life.

The project team arrived on site in November to carry out preparatory work. Once the last train had passed through on Christmas Eve, engineers then moved in to dismantle the overhead line equipment and remove the existing track before the deck was lifted out. The new pre-fabricated deck was then inched into place and the railway then reinstated.

Meanwhile, a similar project took place at Barnetby in North Lincolnshire where engineers took advantage of the train-free period on Christmas and Boxing Day to lift out and replace the bridge on Victoria Road, just outside the station. The new structure was brought to site in component form and erected in a specially-constructed compound.

Dating back the 1912, the bridge was again replaced in just 72 hours, with the supporting works being completed in a week.
