DLR Depot Gets £7.7m Revamp

The Docklands Light Railway’s Beckton depot is to get a £7.7m makeover, to be carried out by Mowlem over the next 12 months.

The work involves four new sidings, and new track connections to the DLR and the existing depot. It will hold 36 new vehicles which will serve the busy Bank – Lewisham route and eventually the Woolwich extension, which opens in 2009.

In addition the depot substation will be upgraded and a new level crossing added, with new walkways and lighting also planned. There will also be alterations to power, signalling and communications equipment.

Jonathan Fox, Director of the DLR, said: “This project will put in place another key part of the expansion of the DLR as it prepares for its position at the forefront of the transport system for the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2012.”

The depot is funded by Transport for London, as part of a five year programme, £10bn investment programme.
