ICE in the tunnel may not prove such a bad prospect for Eurostar after all. Deutsche Bahn AG has said it is interested in buying a stake in Eurostar and using paths to run Intercity Express through from Berlin to London.
Speaking in Berlin, DB's chief executive, Ruediger Grube said, ‘Naturally it's attractive to run trains to London. Our goal is to go with the ICE to London, but only if we make money in the medium term, otherwise we're not going to touch it.'
German rail chiefs believe over one million people a year would use the service to travel from Berlin and Cologne to London and back.
