Moffat Quits NIR
Philip O’Neill, has been appointed acting Chief Executive of Translink, the public body responsible for rail services and most bus operations in Northern Ireland. Erstwhile CEO, Keith Moffat, stepped down abruptly on New Year’s Eve.Translink’s parent company, the Northern Ireland Transport Holding Company,(NITHCo) has not been able to give the reason for Mr Moffat’s unscheduled departure. He had been in post three years securing much needed investment for Northern Ireland’s crumbling railway infrastructure and a fleet of new CAF Spanish-built trains. Sources in Belfast believe he found dealing with the Whitehall-controlled Department of Regional Development which owns NITHCo, increasingly frustrating. NITHCo chair, Veronica Palmer, said she was, ‘disappointed that Keith has chosen to leave at this time.’ Mrs Palmer went on to praise Moffat for developing public transport in Northern Ireland. ‘Under his leadership, Translink has improved the range and quality of bus and rail services, notably with the introduction of the Metro service in the Greater Belfast area. These changes have delivered impressive increases in passenger numbers and restored financial stability to our operating companies.’ PhilipO’Neill was previously Translink’s general manager of the bus section.
