Light Rail Lift

June 22nd 2005

As costs continue to spiral on new light rail systems, WyvernRail thinks it may be able to help.

EROSI under constructionThe Wirksworth based company has set up a testing and training system, MyTestTrack.com, which is now playing a key role in reducing the cost of tram systems through innovative technologies. In January, WyvernRail’s base at Wirksworth was designated as the new headquarters of the National Ultra Light Rail Research, Development and Test Centre.

The first vehicle to arrive is EROS1, a revolutionary new test bed for an advanced twin flywheel vehicle, partially constructed by Severn Lamb and system tested at Clayton Engineering. The Carbon Trust is funding further development of EROS1, while final assembly will also be undertaken at Wirksworth.

EROS1 joins two other light rail vehicles, one of which was operated by Bristol Electric Railbus between SS Great Britain and central Bristol between 1998 and 2001. Units of a similar design have been proposed for use in the Greek town of Kalamata as part of a sustainable transport project funded by the European Union.

Meanwhile, WyvernRail has acted as host to representatives of the British Isles’ leading Light Rail systems during March. Thermit Welding (GB) Ltd, the rail industry’s leading supplier of rail welding equipment and materials exhibited a high-output rail grinder designed mainly for use on urban light rail systems, although its capacity extends to operations on the main infrastructure; and a new technique for resurfacing and repairing railheads, including grooved rail so as to extend the life of the rail, as well as reducing vehicle noise.

Thermit chose the MyTestTrack facility at Wirksworth because of its central location and ready access for road/rail vehicles. Welcoming representatives from Transport for London, Manchester Metrolink, Nottingham Express Transit and the Dublin Light Rail System, Thermit’s Technical Director, Mr. Richard Johnson said, “WyvernRail has done us proud once more. Not only do they have the right facilities in the right location, they see to all the details. Where else can you get a full engineer’s possession with home-baked cakes thrown in?”

WyvernRail has worked hard to reopen the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway between Duffield and Wirksworth and has transformed the line from a neglected wilderness to a clear route suitable for vehicle movements throughout its length.
