London Rail Plan Goes into Orbit

December 6th 2005

London’s orbital rail routes are coming under Network Rail’s scrutiny, with 16 new ways of meeting increasing demand being put forward.

A trio of new Class 376 EMU trainsets nears London Bridge with a peak hour service from the Kent Coast to Charing Cross. August 2005. Their new draft Cross London Route Strategy aims to meet expected passenger increases of between 20 and 30% on the West, East and South London lines over the next decade. More freight traffic is also expected.

The draft strategy identifies ‘pinch points’ that need relieving, and the options that bring the biggest benefits to a region that will see its population rise by one million and 600,000 more jobs created as the 2012 Olympics approach.

Suggested solutions include additional peak hour trains between Stratford and Camden Road, doubled services on the Gospel Oak to Barking route, and diverting the London Bridge to Victoria service to Clapham Junction.

As well as comments from the rail industry and stakeholders, value for money tests will decide which options will go forward to the final version of the strategy.

John Armitt, Network Rail chief executive, said: “This consultation presents a series of ambitious, but realistic options and affords us a unique opportunity to draw on all the major transport plans for London and take account of significant future events.

“We look forward to hearing the views of a wide range of interested parties, including local authorities and regional development agencies,” he added.
