Striking the right chord

July 28th 2010

Work to upgrade the rail freight network has taken a step forward with the Department for Transport's backing of the Nuneaton North Chord, following a public inquiry earlier this year.

The new section of track will leave the Birmingham to Leicester line near Two Bridges and run parallel with the West Coast Main Line for almost a mile before joining it near Canal Farm. This will remove the need for freight services to cross four tracks, preventing disruption to passenger services.

The Nuneaton North Chord forms an important part of Network Rail's strategic freight network, a programme of investment to improve freight capacity across the country. It will provide eight additional daily freight paths to and from Felixstowe, helping to take around 225,000 lorries off the roads.

Work on the chord is expected to start next spring and is likely to take around 18 months to complete.
