Maglev For Japan

Japan intends to launch its first passenger carrying Maglev service by 2025, initially linking Tokyo with Nagoya. Eventually the line will extend to Japan’s second city of Osaka.

Central Japan Railway said that the Shinkansen had reached its limit in terms of technological development, speed and capacity. The Maglev system, with its top speed of over 300mph, would replace Shinkansen services between the two cities.

Masayuki Matsumoto, Central Japan Railway President, said that his company would seize the initiative and turn Maglev into a reality. In the more immediate future the company also plans to extend its Maglev test  track by another 27 miles.
