Continued investment in the development of our employees’ wide-ranging skills will ensure that we continue to provide a service of the highest quality to all our customers.

In our strive for continued innovation we have created an excellent opportunity for a Rail Plant Development Engineer to join our team, working on a diverse range of projects and reporting to the Engineering Manager of VolkerRail Plant.

This is an opportunity for a high calibre engineer to demonstrate flair for lateral thinking in developing mechanised solutions that will bring improved efficiencies and give VolkerRail competitive advantage and continued success. The scope of the role shall range from Small Plant, through RRV equipment and up to large Rail Mounted cranes and OTMs. You will be required to develop robust technical specifications from conceptual ideas provided by our business managers and develop firm proposals including development costs, DCF analysis and overall benefits both physical and financial to the company.

You will passionately embrace safe working principles and consider the health, safety, welfare and environmental aspects of all development projects, to continually improve these areas of plant performance.

The success of the role will be measured on the effectiveness of the proposed solution in terms of physical and financial performance including enhanced safety, improved wellbeing of our staff and effects on the environment. The proposed solutions must consider route-to-market, costs, revenue, capital investment and cash impact. You will also manage development time and costs effectively to deliver against agreed plans and budgets.

You will ensure engineering excellence (with consistent quality standards) is achieved throughout the life cycle of the project, from pre-feasibility costing exercises, business case preparation, through design and implementation phases and up to handover to the Relevant Business Managers.

You will have gained significant demonstrable experience working with Railway Plant, be able to effectively communicate on technical and commercial considerations and will have an up-to-date knowledge of applicable standards and legislation. A degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering is desirable for this role, however exceptional candidates with an HNC or equivalent in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering will be considered. In addition Professional membership (either C Eng or I Eng) of an appropriate engineering institution is desirable.

You will possess a ‘can-do’ attitude, excellent organisational ability and be able to integrate into a wider team. Your software skills will include MS Project, MS Powerpoint & MS Excel.
