Purpose of the Role
To carry out repairs and maintenance to a high standard on a variety of Locomotives & Rolling Stock operated by Colas Rail Ltd to ensure that the reliability is maintained.
Key Areas of Responsibility & Accountability
- Be responsible for the Safe and efficient operation of the Dunbar Wagon Maintenance Workshop and associated Locomotive Fuelling Point.
- Supervision of staff working at Dunbar Wagon Workshop.
- To provide additional technical and practical support to fitter/ground staff during maintenance in the field.
- When required to assist in any maintenance activities on locomotives and wagons away from the Home depot.
- Reporting directly to the Fleet Engineer - Wagons
- To carry out maintenance and repairs to a high standard in the Home depot on all locomotives and wagons by Colas Rail Ltd.
- To work safely with due regard to their own and other peoples wellbeing.
- During depot activities to keep the workplace clean and tidy at all times in compliance with all Health and Safety and Environmental practices and policies.
- At all times wear personal protective equipment appropriate to the tasks being carried out.
- Comply with all local and company rules or instructions on safety matters.
- Participate in a positive manner in all company safety initiatives.
- Attend safety briefing sessions as required by the company.
- Complete all appropriate documentation for periodic maintenance in a responsible and professional manner making it available to The Fleet Engineer - Wagons for examination and filling.
- When required work on locomotives and wagons away from the Home Depot.
- Attend for work in compliance with a previously agreed Rota, which may include weekends, night shifts and lodging.
- Attend off or onsite training to improve knowledge and competence of maintenance techniques and practices.
- Present themselves for duty promptly and fit to carry out their duties as required by the company policy and procedures and when required book on and off duty through the Rail Plant Help Desk at Rugby.
- At the end of each working shift provide a comprehensive written account to the Technician, Traction & Rolling Stock detailing all works carried out.
- From time to time if the need arises be prepared to lodge away from home for a limited period in order to efficiently carry out maintenance duties on locomotives and wagons.
- Be in possession of a full UK road vehicle driving licence, which must be presented for inspection by the company annually or as and when required.
- When driving company vehicles, do so within the bounds of the Highway Code and any appropriate company instructions or procedures.
- Participate in the taking of samples for analysis and any works arising from these as part of the Condition Based Monitoring scheme.
- Comply with all company procedures regarding issuing equipment from Depot based stores holdings.
- Participate fully and proactively in the company competency assessment programme.
Person Specification
- To be able to work a shift pattern that will include nights and weekends.
- Ensure compliance with all company standards and procedures when carrying out maintenance works.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Excellent IT skills with working knowledge of Word & Excel.
- Ability to understand technical drawings and maintenance schedules.
- Physically fit and have passed the require company medical.
- Flexible, honest and reliable.
- Have an extensive knowledge and in date competencies on a wide range of locomotives, wagons and welding.
- Possess a structured methodical approach to problem solving.
- Demonstrate the ability to work equally as well as an individual or as part of a team.
- Have served any approved and appropriate apprenticeship either internal or external may be advantageous.
- Willingness to continue personal development through training.
- Having a positive outlook on the requirement for continuous change to accommodate the current business needs.
- Having an enquiring and inquisitive mind and being prepared to challenge and think outside of the recognised cultural norm on procedures and practices.
