Our client provides a wide range of Civil, Geotechnical, Electrical and Multi-Disciplinary Design solutions.The scope of our work and experience of our staff extends through the Civil and Electrical Engineering spectrum's, with particular emphasis on Rail and Highways infrastructure projects. Our project involvement spans from survey and design through to CDM coordination.
We are in a period of growth and are looking to add an experienced Civil Engineering Designer to our team in either London or Swindon.
Description of Role
As a Design Engineer you will be expected to work in a design office environment, whilst providing working design solutions to technical problems with the minimum of supervision.
Responsibilities
• Undertake site visits and site surveys.
• Provide best value working design solutions to technical problems.
• Manage the project to ensure the timely delivery of information and within the budget.
• Check the work of other members of staff and provide assistance to their continued learning and development.
• Work effectively within a multi-disciplinary design environment such that designs consider the impact across all relevant disciplines.
• Undertake calculations using design software but also by hand as required.
• Develop internal procedures, in-house skills and keep the Integrated Management System (IMS) up to date.
• Provide sufficient information and support to enable Technicians to produce detailed design drawings suitable for construction.
• Compile the fee for design delivery when required.
• Have a working knowledge of Statutory Regulations and Codes of Practice. A working knowledge of Network Rail Standards and Railway Group Standards is beneficial.
• Have a working knowledge of the CDM 2015 regulations, ensuring that designs are compliant and produce Designers Risk Assessments for projects.
• Produce written reports and specifications for works.
• Attend design review meetings and progress meetings and act as the point of contact for the Client.
• Coordinate the appointment of sub consultants/specialists necessary to complete the design process.
• Perform the role of Contractor’s Responsible Engineer (CRE) for Design on rail-specific projects where suitable rail experience can be demonstrated.

• Ability to work on own initiative.
• Ability to present new ideas efficiently.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Willingness to lead by example, with a strong attention to detail and accuracy.
• Competent user of relevant design software packages, as well as Microsoft Word and Excel.
• Extensive knowledge of current markets conditions.
• Ability to work under pressure, whilst ensuring deadlines are met.
• Flexibility to work day/night shifts.
• Rail design experience is considered advantageous.
• A proven commitment to continued professional development.
Qualifications and Experience
• Master Degree in Civil Engineering
• Previous experience in a similar position with in rail, highways or civils.
• Chartered Membership of a relevant Institution (e.g. ICE, IStructE).
