Samuel Knight International are pleased to be hiring a contract (freelance) design manager to be based south of London with our client based in Sussex. Our client are a consultant engineering company specialising in major infrastructure works covering Rail, Highways and Utilities.

In this instance we are looking for a candidate with Rail experience, specifically Network Rail projects & possessing a good knowledge of design phases of the GRIP process. The candidate we are seeking would ideally hold chartered status, but we will consider candidates with compensating experience.

This is an initial 12 month freelance assignment to cover a fixed term absence from the company. It is possible that contractors delivering an excellent service will be found new assignments, as this company is actively targeting large amounts of new work at the moment.

The Design Manager to be responsible for ensuring and assuring the governance of all design activities across a broad range of projects, managing a team of up to 20 multi-disciplined engineers. (Predominantly Railway Civil; Track, Structures, Earthworks etc.)


Daily Responsibilities include:

  • Responsibility for the establishment of full client requirements – including all design deliverables split by design stage (i.e. GRIP stage).
  • Identifying the suitable resource to undertake the design activities, where necessary utilising relationships with 3rd parties and hiring into the company.
  • Negotiating with and contributing to the appointment of all necessary design subcontracts
  • Establishing the monitoring and reporting requirements for the project – in line with the Design Management Process. Experience in a design consultancy is very advantageous here.
  • Monitoring & reporting the completion of the design activities.
  • Ensuring all hand back requirements are established, agreed and communicated to all design parties.

The candidate will have the following experience and skillset:

  • Experience of design management across a series of multi-disciplinary rail systems projects.
  • Team management experience, ideally teams of 15+.
  • Demonstrable record of mentoring and developing team members.
  • Negotiating acumen with 3rd party suppliers and contractors.
  • Financial and planning experience.
