Our client is in need for a talented and enthusiastic Senior Railway Civil Engineer to join the lively Rail design team in Glasgow.

You would be working with our world class team, this role will cover an extremely wide variety of nationally important projects both in the UK and overseas to help shape a better world. The post is within the Rail Engineering SNE Group, which comprises of over 50 dynamic and enthusiastic engineers, designers and railway technicians based in our three SNE office - Glasgow, Edinburgh and Newcastle which contains many multidisciplinary businesses and has over 400 technical staff.

You will be part of a team in Glasgow responsible for the successful delivery of our design commissions for major clients including Network Rail, Transport Scotland, HS2 Ltd, SPT, Contractors (in a design and build context) and other agencies such as Train Operators, Councils, Passenger Transport Executives and academic institutions.

As a senior engineer and line manager member of the Rail Civil Engineering Team, the role forms a key position providing civil engineering skills and technical knowledge of railway design and operations input into single- and multidisciplinary projects. You will be responsible for and working as part of a large team comprising designers, engineers and technicians, or leading a number of Engineers and more junior technical staff with input to railway projects of various sizes. You will also be responsible for liaising regularly with staff managers and other technical leads, CREs, and team leaders.

Role

You will be responsible for the technical Civil Engineering design input on Rail projects, and will lead(mentored if necessary) the Design Management of the civil disciplines on Projects, coordination and managing all the necessary interfaces and input that are required to deliver a railway design. You will be responsible for liaison with relevant external parties to ensure understanding of the client's needs and project requirements. Also responsible for liaising regularly with staff managers and other technical leads and team leaders. You will regularly report to your team leader, and where necessary your project manager, and ultimately the Group leader.

Technically, on projects you will also be responsible for the production, checking, and approval of detailed railway designs and calculations within an implementation project, ensuring the adequacy of the products. You will also be responsible for outline and detailed railway design input and calculations (concepts/ design principles) to multidisciplinary design teams on larger or medium sized projects. This work content will include producing or checking: preliminary and detailed railway Civils layouts; technical studies and reports; generation and evaluation of technical design options; design calculations and analysis; specialised report writing and interfacing with other disciplines. The work may also include concept design, feasibility design and operations.

Essential Skills and Knowledge:


o Experience in the UK (and to a lesser degree overseas experience) in the rail industry is essential. Will have a significant understanding of the UK rail network and of the inter-relationship between operational needs and the resulting infrastructure.
o Excellent underpinning knowledge of railway, civil engineering, geotechnical and structural engineering design principles, standards, components, and fabrication methods is essential. Substantial hands-on experience of the production or checking of feasibility, outline and detailed railway designs and calculations (alignment, track, civil engineering structures, drainage, formation, operations, etc) will also be necessary.
o Experience in the use of design software packages (MicroStation, InRail, TerraModelling, ClearRoute, etc) will be necessary. Experience of other software tools (Project Programming, Word Processor, Spreadsheets, etc.) will also be necessary.
o Understanding of the key interactions between railway assets and systems and of railway operating practices. Good experience of railway and civil engineering construction methods and installation.
o Able to work well as part of a team within railway and civil engineering projects and supportive to the other Railway group disciplines; and being flexible to project and Client needs. As such, will be accustomed to multitask to respond to Client requests and able to cope with interruptions as projects demand.


Qualifications:

o Good Civil Engineering Degree (B.Eng, M.Eng or equivalent) recognised by an appropriate Professional Body, or its equivalent.
o Any other post graduate achievements (Diploma, PhD, etc) would be an advantage.
o A member of the Institution of Civil Engineers and a Chartered/Incorporated Engineer.


Desirable skills and knowledge:
o Excellent proven project and design management of heavy, light rail and metro detailed design, scheme design, feasibility and survey work.
o You may have experience of acting formally in the role of Contractor's Responsible Engineer (CRE) for Network Rail (or equivalent), or be in a position to move into this role under mentorship.
o Support in the preparation of bids, tenders, and conditions of engagement, and control investment spend in the bid/tendering and business development process. This also includes leadership of promotional activities locally and across the wider UK rail industry.
o Track record and a passion to mentor, motivate and develop the skills of team members at all grades learning on the job providing guidance, training and feedback and recommending appropriate training.
