£63,520 - £70,859 per annum
Location: London

Closing Date: 5 May 2019

Your commercial expertise will keep us on track

About us

Focused on delivering a world-class service, Rail Passenger Services ensures the successful development, specification and procurement of rail franchises and the day-to-day management of franchise contracts. Part of Department of Transport, we make sure that passengers get the services they need and deserve, that taxpayers get value for money, and that the benefits from investment in our railways are maximised.

The role

Your experience of railway operations will be pivotal in this commercially focused role. Working with a portfolio of specific franchises or projects, you will provide expert commercial and technical advice on both day-to-day performance and strategic infrastructure issues. Fostering productive working relationships with train operators, our frontline delivery partners, and ensuring that they meet their contractual and performance obligations, will be critical to your success. You can also expect to advise and brief Ministers and carry out major contractual negotiations.

About you

This is a challenging role in a fast-moving, commercial environment that requires a good understanding of rail operations, performance regimes and market pressures, as well as political and regulatory issues. With a track-record of negotiating major contracts, you will have a focus on robust financial and resource management, delivering efficiencies and securing cost-saving opportunities. The ability to build and establish collaborative commercial relationships with multiple stakeholders at board level is essential. Capable of solving complex problems in a pressurised environment, you will have exceptional communication and negotiation skills, and a high degree of personal resilience.

Benefits

As a Civil Service employee, you’ll be entitled to a large range of benefits, including:

- Regular performance and development reviews
- 25 days of annual leave on entry, increasing to 30 days after 5 years
- One further day paid privilege entitlement to mark the Queen’s Birthday
- Flexible working patterns including part- time or time-term working
- Generous paid maternity and paternity leave
- Interest-free season ticket and bicycle loans
- Competitive contributory pension scheme
