It’s an exciting time to join, as in 2017 CAF celebrated its 100th year, and announced plans to build a new state-of-the art assembly hub in Newport. The new assembly hub is being designed to build a range of different trains, including diesel multiple units (DMUs), electric multiple units (EMUs), trams and high speed trains.

Job Summary

Working as part of the testing team, the Testing Team Leader is responsible for overseeing day-to-day working within the team(s), ensuring the electrical and/or pneumatic tests of verification and validation of the train are complete and follow the established testing protocol of tests.

Key Responsibilities:

1.0 Team Leader

1.1 Leads a team that performs a wide variety of advanced and complex tasks involving the use of electronic and pneumatic test equipment.

1.2 Carries out complex level tasks involving troubleshooting, testing, quality control, tuning, complicated repairs.

1.3 Liaises with Production Team Leaders to discuss and/or resolve problems.

1.4 Ensures that assignments are completed in the established timescales.

1.5 Ensures failures and anomalies are identified and rectified.

1.6 Ensures test reports/records are completed.

1.7 Ensure area of work is clean, well-organised and safe; and adheres to Company housekeeping processes.

1.8 Carry out lean production activities.

1.9 Ensure all staff have a clear understanding and comply with the rules, regulations, standards and policies in place.

1.10 Ensure all records are completed correctly and on time.

1.11 Organise and communicate job expectations to team(s).

1.12 Monitors team(s) to ensure objectives/targets are achieved on time.

1.13 Liaise with manager to ensure resource levels are in place to achieve planned activities.

1.14 Reviews work in progress across team(s) and make certain that the order of tasks and allocation of resources creates maximum efficiency.

1.15 Ensures the correct use and operation of machinery and equipment and ensure that all routine daily maintenance and safety checks are carried out on time.

1.16 Carry out team briefings and tool box talks.

1.17 Liaise with Line Manager to ensure team members are competent to carry out full range of tasks and have received appropriate levels of training in area of work.

1.18 Carries out assessment of competence for team and others as required.

1.19 Carry out training / act as coach and mentor to enable better performance and development of skills within team(s) and others.

1.20 Participate in the induction and on-going training of employees.

1.21 Pro-actively seek out process improvements and efficiency savings, recommending to line manager where improvements can be made or costs reduced.

1.22 Ensure equipment is maintained and fully operational by liaising with other experts regarding repairs/maintenance checks where necessary, ensuring adequate materials are available or ordered in sufficient time to eliminate shortages.

1.23 Ensure equipment/plant is maintained and fully operational, reporting damage/breakdowns in a timely manner.

1.24 Report on progress/constraints influencing work plans as appropriate.

1.25 Supports other teams/departments and assists management for various production related duties as required.

2.0 Record keeping

2.1 Ensures accurate records are completed and maintained in accordance with procedures in place, and work in progress is communicated to Line Managers and team members.

3.0 Health & Safety

3.1 Carry out Health and safety inspections in accordance with the Health & Safety Policy and Procedure in place, and ensure actions are complete and/or progress on actions reported.

3.2 Ensure that all work carried out within the team(s) is compliant with health and safety legislation and organisational health and safety policies and procedures.

4.0 Quality

4.1 Ensure all work carried out within the team(s) is compliant with organisational quality management systems/policies and procedures.

4.2 Liaise with others to ensure adequate flow of material in/out of work area to ensure team is able to achieve targets on time.

5.0 General

5.1 Is pro-active in the role and identifies improved ways of supporting the Company in managing their growth objectives.

5.2 Participate in team and one-to-one meetings, and undertake, as appropriate, training, relevant to the role as required.

5.3 Keep up to date with developments and policies and procedures within the Company, that influence the day-to-day activities within the role, ensuring compliance with relevant legislation and any other relevant internal/external factors e.g. Company policies and procedures, quality management standards, health and safety.

5.4 Promote the Company by whatever means are appropriate and available so as to ensure a positive image to internal/external customers/clients.

5.5 Ensure, in the course of employment, complete confidentiality is maintained in respect of the Company, its dealings, transactions, and all

other information relating to clients / customers, staff etc.

NVQ Level 3 / Modern Apprenticeship in electrical or mechanical discipline.

ILM Level 3 Leadership & Management or equivalent e.g. NVQ L3.

ü

IOSH qualification or equivalent health and safety qualification.

Qualified Assessor, or prepared to carry out and complete qualification if required.

ü

Current First Aid at Work qualification.

ü

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Significant specialist experience in testing rolling stock or a comparable industrial environment.

ü

Ablility to adjust electrical and/or pneumatic parts to include doors, trapdoors, folding racks and beds.

ü

Experience of ‘lean manufacturing’ tools and techniques.

ü

Able to train others on process and job role requirements.

ü

Able to interpret and follow schematics/blueprints and other relevant documentation.

ü

Experience of effectively prioritising work of self and others, and optimising and improving use of resources including teams, tools and equipment.
