Purpose of the Job

Professional Engineering Services are a group of multidisciplinary engineers who are resourced across the Project to help resolve and close-out assurance activity and provide delivery engineering excellence across all disciplines.

Professional Engineering Services Consultants can expect to drive required delivery engineering to completion for an Element or Routeway Chapter; support the overall handover process; support the Project Directors (PDs) in all Engineering matters, ensuring that the integrated solutions deliver to meet the technical requirements; ensuring that stakeholders are appropriately assured of the direction and quality of engineering outputs.

The role will require focus on (but not be limited to) overseeing the technical aspects of engineering, construction, testing and commissioning, handover activities and provide services as defined by Head of Professional Engineering Services

Principal Accountabilities

Lead or be part of a workstream and drive the activities to completion.

Provide safe, reliable, and fit for purpose engineering solutions to meet the Project scope, time and budget requirements using appropriate standards/norms acting as the controlling mind for the solution.

Build relationships, both internal and external at senior management and director levels, to enable successful delivery of the engineering solutions.

Use technical and commercial knowledge and experience to identify and resolve complex engineering issues that present risk to the successful delivery of the Project. This will require in depth negotiation through to successful solutions. Whilst working closely with the PM and their commercial team.

Identify, manage, and mitigate engineering related risks to the Project with a focus on the safety, reliability (dependability), quality, function and performance of operational assets and systems.

Assist in identifying and promoting the use of smarter/safer/leaner Engineering techniques, technologies and systems including facilitating continuous improvement and a learning culture in relation to the Project. Including providing feedback for lessons learned to improve process, activities and understanding of the Professional Engineering Services initiatives.

Identify and elevate any issues that may appear to be or become blockers to progressing the closure of the safety assurance documentation and technical assurance documentation.

Participate in/Lead workshops focusing on resolving assurance documentation issues and completion of the handover process.

Main Challenges of the Job

Provide engineering support ensuring that technical standards are being applied through critical examination of contractor’s assurance evidence submissions.

Ensure contractors comply with applicable standards, specifications, and procedures.

Provide technical advice to project teams within area of expertise.

Contribute to successful system integration through involvement of relevant disciplines and parties.

Person Specification

Experience:

Experience of providing professional and technical advice, guidance, and support on project engineering issues.

Experience of project engineering in one discipline area.

Experience of carrying out technical document review and analysis.

Preferred experience in underground railways.

Experience of building relationships with, and influencing, a range of people at all levels within and outside the organisation.

Experience of working in a construction or engineering environment is desirable.

Knowledge:

Chartered Engineer Status or qualifications leading to Chartered Status together with membership of an appropriate professional institution. Very broad knowledge of transport systems engineering, operational and commercial systems backed-up by strong aptitude for holistic / integrative thinking.

Experience in thinking strategically and identifying systems and processes required to meet immediate and longer term aims.

Experience of asset management and whole life costing/ evaluation techniques is desirable.

Well-developed knowledge of maintenance techniques and good industry practice.

Knowledge of safety legislation and operating rules and regulations.

Knowledge and capability to undertake quality inspections and site investigations.

Skills:

Ability to deal with hard issues, working outside their comfort zone, with a completer / finisher mentality.

Ability to analyse complex data, draw conclusions, produce reports, and make recommendations to senior management.

Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with people at all levels across the organisation and externally.

Ability to manage customer expectations and deliver service to meet these expectations, managing conflicting priorities to achieve tight deadlines.

Proven ability to coordinate and integrate Engineering activities to deliver assured engineering solutions.

Adaptability, Agility and Flexibility to be applied in line with programme/project requirements.

Ability to manage multidisciplinary teams to deliver effective performance.

Ability to reach back for support when necessary and communicate efficiently how best they can be assisted.

Ability to use office-based computer packages, e.g. MS Office (Outlook, Word, Excel) to basic level.
