The Transpennine Route Upgrade Project (TRU) is a circa £2b multi-disciplinary project upgrading the existing railway route between Manchester and Leeds through the Pennines. It is the largest rail and infrastructure project in the north of England over the next 5 years. BAM work as part of the Transpire Alliance structure with Amey, Arup and Network Rail, meaning we all have Alliance facing roles as well as undertaking our BAM responsibilities. We require an Assistant Temporary Works Design engineer to join the team working out of project and site offices in Leeds or Manchester, with site-based requirements across the Transpennine route.
Your mission
- Liaise with other departments and project teams within the Company with respect to design requirements.
- Undertake site visits when appropriate.
- Ensure that the design work undertaken is carried out in accordance with the Company procedures and that a high level of professionalism is maintained.
- Ensure that work can be evaluated by the recording of all time spent on design tasks.
- Prepare detailed designs in accordance with current standards and codes including calculations, design risk assessments and sufficiently detailed sketches for the preparation of 3D models and drawings.
- Summarise quantities relating to design tasks and prepare for pricing purposes.
- Carry out other relevant duties as required from time to time.
- Ensure design database is maintained with up to date and relevant data.
Who are we looking for?
The following are mandatory requirements:
- Some knowledge of civil engineering design which may include earth retaining structures, foundations, structural steelwork, reinforced concrete, timber and formwork/falsework.
- Some knowledge of method related construction methods.
- Degree in Civil Engineering or a related subject, or accepted alternate qualification.
- Working to attain chartered engineer status.

- Construction site experience
