Demand for rail travel in Great Britain is soaring and the government is investing in railway infrastructure to match this demand.

We are currently recruiting for a Distribution Engineer to become a key member of the team and have a high level of competency to deliver distribution designs within the Rail sector.

The design works will encompass 25 kV & AT OLE traction systems, 3rd Rail, 4th Rail & Light Rail distribution systems, depots and trackside schemes.

Atkins rail electrification team undertakes all aspects of railway electrical traction power design in the rail environment including survey, design drawings and calculations, technical specifications and reports. The team has close collaborative links with the Atkins Transmission & Distribution sector and thus there are sharing opportunities for working on the National Grid electrical energy distribution network.

Responsibilities

• Undertake distribution design work within a Rail environment.
• Site surveys and the preparation of designs to company, Network Rail, LU, DLR & other applicable standards
• Prepare design deliverable packages for professional submission including drawings and other items.
• Prepare equipment electrical specifications for both outline and detailed designs.
• Prepare procurement specifications to support new and modified designs.
• Maintain a good understanding of Atkins Rail business standards of safety, quality and design.

Essential Requirements

• Proven experience in a technical design, Rail or other such regulated environment
• Further education qualification in Electrical Engineering or equivalent
• Appropriate experience working within design teams in a project-driven organisation, infrastructure environment.
• Working knowledge of design software such as Bentley Microstation
• Experience working with detailed electrical engineering distribution substation, switchgear, transformers and associated ancillary equipment drawings.
• The successful applicant will be a competent user of IT tools such as Microsoft Office.

Desirable Requirements

• AC/DC traction electrification experience.
• Chartered / Incorporated Engineer or working towards
• Experience of planning and providing cost and budgetary control and monitoring.
• Working knowledge of Amtech Pro Design, ETAP, DigiSilent or similar packages would be an advantage.
• Experienced CAD user able to produce both 2D and 3D drawings from designs produced by others and from own designs.

This role may require security clearance and offers of employment will be dependent on obtaining the relevant level of clearance. If this is necessary it will be discussed with you at interview.
