EMC (Electromagnetic Compatibility) Electrical Design Engineer in Manchester, Greater Manchester, United Kingdom

What is the purpose of this role?
To fulfil a role within the clients Electrical Power design team in the Birmingham office. To provide leadership and mentorship to junior design engineers. To manage design teams for projects with a view to meeting contract requirements, deadlines and budgets, maintaining high quality, whilst cultivating professional relationships with clients.
What will this role involve?
- Planning surveys and leading site survey teams
- Demonstrating a sound understanding of the design process
- Ability to undertake design work for electrical installations and undertake EMC studies
- Undertaking CDM/risk analyses
- Checking designs to ensure all contractual requirements have been satisfied to a level that complies with Network Rail, British and European Standards
- Keeping up to date with current Network Rail, British and European Standards
- Managing the EMC and/or Electrical Power design for projects
- Effective communication with the client including representing the EMC design at client meetings
- Effective communication with other design/construction disciplines and sub-contractors
- Undertaking low complexity design cost estimates
- Developing and mentoring junior staff
- Writing EMC and earthing and bonding strategies for new electrification and renewals projects, to define the EMC requirements from GRIP 3 to GRIP 7.
- Chairing EMC hazard workshops and determining generic and specific mitigations to control risks.
- Compiling the GRIP 2/3 EMC Control Plans and supporting projects in implementing appropriate mitigations to control EMC and earthing and bonding hazards.
- Undertaking modelling of induction into lineside systems and structures to close out hazards and define design practice.
- Supporting innovations which can offer a significant benefit to future projects and electrification scheme.
- Reviewing project documentation to ensure that designs are compliant with the EMC strategy
- Presenting designs, mitigation and investigation findings to engineering projects, seminars and industry conferences.
The work is office based but will include a considerable amount of site survey work. This will include carrying out site surveys for electrical and EMC purposes and undertaking night time inspections. This survey work may include overnight stays.
What are we looking for?
- MEng/MSc in Electrical Engineering or equivalent
- Member of the Institution of Engineering & Technology (IET)
- Holding or working towards professional registration as an Incorporated Engineer or Chartered Engineer with the IET
- 17th Edition of IET Wiring Regulations
- Excellent level of computer literacy in Microsoft Office and Excel
- Highly proficient in the use of the English language (both written and spoken)
- Comprehensive knowledge of Network Rail, British and European electrical and lighting Standards
- Good understanding of systems engineering including the Verification & Validation and SRAM processes
- Good understanding of CDM and CSM processes with good skills for managing hazards and risks
- Good understanding of project management processes and structures
- Demonstrates excellent commercial awareness
- Preferably five years postgraduate experience in railway electrical power design (e.g. signalling power, points heating, lighting and building services, etc.)
- An ability to identify innovative solutions to problems, with an interest in the application and promotion of energy reduction techniques
- Good organisational and leadership skills
- Some experience with leading teams during site surveys
- Uses clear communication lines within the electrical design team
- Self-motivated and pro-active in terms of checking and supervising design production
- Significant experience of EMC design or consultancy
- Excellent report writing, presentation and communication skills
- Good project management skills and the ability to work effectively with other design disciplines
- Experience of EMC hazard identification, mitigation and management
- Computational modelling of electrical systems, traction power systems or EMC scenarios
- Understanding of electromagnetic theory and inductive coupling between conductors.
