Job title: Electrical Project Engineer - Vehicle Systems
Job location: Birmingham
The business is a leader in railway rolling stock engineering, enhancement and systems integration and provides high quality turnkey project and consultancy services to maximise vehicle utilisation and performance. With excellent rail engineering, production and project management skills; the company operates from design and engineering offices in Birmingham and from a range of project facilities to suit vehicle and fleet locations.
Due to an expanding engineering team and high forward order book, my client wish to recruit additional Electrical Project Engineers to work within its existing team of rolling stock engineers. The positions will report directly to the Head of Engineering Technical.
The Opportunity
The role is primarily a project engineering role. The Electrical Project Engineer will be responsible for undertaking the engineering required to integrate technology enhancements onto existing rolling stock under turnkey projects. This will extend from contract award, through design, material procurement, validation and installation. The role will include client and supplier liaison, and will require the engineer to work closely with the Project Manager, the rest of the engineering/design team, and to ensure quality timely delivery of major turnkey projects.
The individual will be able to demonstrate an excellent level of technical knowledge although this does not necessarily need to have been within a rail environment.
This is an excellent opportunity in a position that will enable the candidate to demonstrate an ability to deliver in a challenging project focussed environment where customers are at the forefront of delivery.
Job Responsibilities
* Be responsible for delivering solutions to a range of Electrical Engineering problems related to passenger and freight rolling stock.
* Support the Head of Engineering Technical and Project Manager by managing the electrical engineering solutions.
* Act as "Lead Engineer" for projects, co-ordinating a team of both electrical and mechanical engineers to deliver the engineering elements within an agreed budget and time scale.
* Produce non-drawing technical documentation associated with a project, and support the design department in the production of engineering drawings. For example, tasks will include schematic design sketches, purchase specifications, technical descriptions, installation and test procedures, risk assessments, on vehicle testing, electrical FMECA's, installation support and leading internal and external design reviews.
* Identify and specify electrical components, and provide technical support to the procurement team.
* Undertake vehicle surveys conducted at maintenance depots around the country to confirm the status of the existing vehicle design and to investigate and confirm the interfacing/integration of new equipment.
* Liaison with customers and suppliers.
* Work to agreed procedures for the control of all drawings and documentation produced.
* Determine the resources required for new projects, including costs and timescales.
Person Profile
* The ideal candidate will have an engineering background from within the rail industry although other sectors will be considered.
* Ideally experience will have been gained in a new build or refurbishment / enhancements sector, with particular experience of the UK rail market desirable. However, candidates with strong engineering knowledge from other sectors of the industry would also be welcomed.
* Sound technical knowledge of various vehicle systems, with an appreciation of the engineering skills required in the following areas; electrical engineering, electromagnetic compatibility, earth bonding, maintenance and reliability, together with a working knowledge of industry standards, approvals processes and legislative requirements.
* An enthusiasm for keeping abreast of emerging technical developments in this area, to identify methods to improve the service offering.
* Engineering Qualifications, preferably leading to Chartered Engineer or lower qualification and equivalent experience.
* Client facing experience.
