Job Summary

An opportunity has arisen for an Geotechnical Engineer to join the Engineering department at VolkerRail.

The role will be involve engaging with all engineering activities within the VolkerRail Ground Investigation business including assessment of client requirements and the advising of more optimal solutions.

This role and responsibilities involve:

  • Undertaking geological assessment of sites as required and proposing likely ground investigation works to the wider construction team for discussion and agreement.
  • Inputting into multidisciplinary tenders, both pricing of geotechnical investigation and reporting elements and into written technical submissions.
  • Produce detailed ground investigation specifications, suitable and appropriate to the client remit.
  • Engaging with the civils design team to advise in the production of details, specifications and calculations for retaining walls, pad foundations, piled foundations, and RC concrete slabs.
  • Working in accordance with agreed programmes
  • Liaising with subcontract testing organisations.
  • Submission of quality factual and interpretive GI reports in accordance with NR/L2/CIV/003, collating the key components as appropriate for inclusion.
  • Producing accurate designers risk assessments, and design decision logs using a wide variety of forms.
  • Providing weekly reports outlining work plans, forecasts and key achievements.
  • Recording and tracking documents via the centralised document control system and monitoring adherence to a quality assurance at all times.

  • Maintaining full understanding of commercial aspects of the project and ensuring appropriate cost control measures.

Job Requirements

Hardworking and professional, you will have experience of carrying out ground investigations and have an all-round strong technical knowledge of geotechnical engineering.

The candidate will also ideally have the following experience/skill set:

    • A degree in civil or geotechnical engineering.
    • A practical geotechnical engineer experienced in the specification of ground investigation and testing requirements for substructure solutions in a railway environment.
  • An ability to work as part of an integral part of the design team and undertake instructions from the Design Manager.
  • Articulate with excellent communication skills: able to explain reasoning to a wider audience and adjust approach where needed to take a wider perspective.
  • Good, practical health and safety awareness - Safety critical position (PTS).
  • Commitment to continuous improvement and learning.
  • Good attention to detail with a professional outlook.

  • Working towards a professional membership.
  • Demonstrable experience of working in a construction environment.
  • Excellent communication and literacy skills.
