Principal Bridge Engineer in Bedford, Bedfordshire, Bedfordshire, United Kingdom

We are currently recruiting for a Principal Bridge Engineer to join our Bridges and Structures team in our centrally located Bedford office.

Our Bedford office has an established track record of successfully delivering bridge engineering schemes for more than 30 years mainly in the Midlands and South East but also throughout the UK. Our office, located at the heart of Bedford Town Centre, has multi-disciplinary bridge assessment and design capability in highway and rail schemes and works closely with other disciplines from the Geotechnical, Environment, Transport Planning and Development Sectors.

The bridges and structures team workload ranges from feasibility studies to scheme designs, detailed designs, assessments, inspections, construction support and management services on a wide range of bridges. We are now looking to enhance and grow this team with individuals with a sound technical background and who share our enthusiasm and determination to support our expanding workload.

A selection of our current and recent projects includes –

  • Structures designs for Highways England schemes including A428 Black Cat to Caxton Gibbet Improvements, A46 Coventry Junctions and OD Capital East Maintenance Works.
  • Brent Cross Cricklewood – the provision of new infrastructure, including some 30 new bridges, associated with a new shopping development.
  • CAFA rail bridge inspection and assessment of structures on the LNE lines.
  • Delivery of structures elements for the Advance Earthworks for the new Nuclear Power Station at Hinkley Point.
  • Midlands Highways Alliance – Network Improvements and Bridge Maintenance schemes for Milton Keynes, Bucks CC and Oxford CC

As a Principal Bridge Engineer you will have the following daily responsibilities:

  • Managing bridge design or assessment commissions.
  • Leading a team of less experienced engineers and technicians.
  • Undertaking designs or assessments and reviewing the work of others within the team.
  • Providing technical direction to and taking responsibility for the contribution of Graduate Engineers and Technicians as appropriate.
  • Client liaison.
  • Project Management including programme and resource monitoring, quality control, technical management and delivery.
  • Mentoring graduate engineers in their progress to professional membership.
  • Bidding for work and contract negotiations.

You will be expected to travel occasionally throughout the UK for client meetings and site visits.

Minimum Requirements

  • Chartered Engineer with ICE or IStructE.
  • Extensive experience in Bridge Engineering and the related application of Eurocodes and Highways England Standards.
  • Excellent technical and communication skills both verbal and written.
  • Demonstrable project management experience delivering to quality, time and budget.
  • Ability to lead teams of engineers and technicians and develop their capabilities.
  • Previous exposure to clients at both national and local level.
  • Ability to manage project Health and Safety responsibilities including compliance with CDM legislation.

Additional areas that would be beneficial:

  • Experience in rail bridge projects and application of Network Rail standards.
  • Experience in working as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • A current clean driving license

Preferred Qualifications

  • Degree educated or equivalent in a relevant subject such as Bridge, Civil or Structural Engineering.
  • Chartered Engineer with ICE or IStructE.
