Senior Bridge Engineer in Plymouth OR Truro, Devon, United Kingdom

We are currently recruiting for a Senior Bridge Engineer to join our busy and expanding regional Bridges team based in Truro with an initial 6-month secondment with our co-located Truro based office with CORMAC. Following completion of secondment the role will either be based within our Truro or Plymouth locations depending upon preferences.

AECOM are engaged as strategic delivery partners with CORMAC, an arms-length contracting and consultancy entity serving Cornwall County Council. Our delivery partners/client CORMAC work to huge range of highway schemes, bridges & structures across Cornwall. Their diverse work load includes bridges replacements, highways upgrades, specialist investigations, structures remediation, strengthening and maintenance as well as award winning schemes including Jubilee Pool refurbishment. The successful candidate will work numerous challenging projects which typically comprise heritage considerations set within an impressive natural landscape.

Plymouth

Our Plymouth office has an established track record of successfully delivering major transport schemes through our buildings and places team which we aim to supplement with the creation of a new bridges team. Our modern office environment has excellent transport links to the city-centre and Cornwall and comprises a vibrant diverse mix of sectors and disciplines including Buildings & Places, Environment, Programme Cost Consulting and Bridges & Structures. The Bridges & Structures will provide design, assessment, inspection, repair / remediation, construction support and management services on a wide range of transport infrastructure projects across the region and further afield.

Our Plymouth bridges team forms part of a South West & Wales region which combined with our Central region consists of 130 bridge engineers and technicians working seamlessly to deliver a wide range of challenging projects. The South-West and Wales region consists of offices in Bristol, Cardiff and Plymouth. The Plymouth presence is newly formed and will consist of several new appointments adding to our rapidly growing regional presence.

Our current portfolio of works comprises a diverse mix of local, national and international bridges and structures projects in both rail and road including numerous long-term frameworks.

A selection of our current and recent projects includes –

  • CORMAC – AECOM appointed as ‘strategic delivery partner’ providing numerous transportation services including bridges to Cornwall County Council on behalf of CORMAC; schemes include bridge replacement, bridge refurbishments and structures remediation.
  • Network Rail Western maintenance – AECOM routinely engaged to undertake remediation works to Network Rail’s structural assets includes, scoping reports, options reports, investigation findings reports and remedial strengthening and/or repairs through F001 to F003.
  • South Gloucestershire PSF framework – AECOM appointed as consultants for the PSF Framework undertaking structures examinations, assessments, investigations and remedial works to highways structures.
  • Civils Assessment Framework Agreement (CAFA) – AECOM appointed across five routes for the CAFA framework contracts. Our Bristol team supports the LNW route in undertaking Level 1 & Level 2 assessments of overbridges, footbridges and underbridges to a multitude of structural materials and structure forms.
  • SWTRA (South Wales Trunk Road Agent) – AECOM are engaged to provide engineering support services within the ‘Central’ section. Recent schemes have included pier impact assessments / strengthening and feasibility studies for the refurbishment of salt barns.
  • Forder Valley – We are current designing a four span semi-integral pre-stressed concrete structure on behalf of Plymouth City Council over the Bircham Valley to connect Brest Road with the new large signalised junction of Forder Valley Road and Novorossiysk Road.

As a Senior Bridge Engineer, you will have the following daily responsibilities:

  • Work with CORMAC’s bridges & structures team on a day to day basis strengthening our client relationship.
  • Take a leading role in the design of major civil engineering structures.
  • Prepare and check designs under minimal supervision.
  • Assist with the commercial and financial control of your project.
  • Analysis and detailed design of road/rail bridges and other structures.
  • Inspection, assessment and strengthening of road/rail bridges and other structures.
  • Supervision and line management of graduate engineers and technicians.
  • Prepare, implement and assess contract documents.
  • Report checking and production of technical reports and documents.
  • Project management of schemes including: client reporting, programming, resource planning and commercial management

Minimum Requirements

  • Experience with bridge and related structural inspection assessment and design schemes.
  • Proven design and project management experience delivering to quality, time and budget.
  • Experience in road projects is essential, experience of rail projects would be advantageous.
  • High level technical skills in current inspection, assessment and design.
  • Previous exposure with clients of both national and local authorities, together with major contractors.
  • Ability to manage staff and project Health and Safety responsibilities including compliance with CDM legislation.
  • You will have a current clean driving license and be willing to travel throughout the UK to visit sites.
  • Strong ability in various software packages ideally including LUSAS and MIDAS.
  • Good knowledge and experience of the following: Eurocode, British, Highways England and Network Rail Standards.
  • Good experience in delivering bridge design through Highways England standards is essential.
  • Experience of site supervision or previous contracting experience would be advantageous.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Degree educated or equivalent in a relevant subject such as Bridge, Civil or Structural Engineering.
  • Ideally educated to MSc level or equivalent.
  • Either a Chartered Engineer with ICE or IStructE, or close to completion.
