Senior Bridge Engineer in Birmingham, West Midlands, United Kingdom

We are currently recruiting for a Senior Bridge Engineer in our centrally located Birmingham office (working from home is an option we will offer during the COVID pandemic) . Our Birmingham team has an established track record of successfully delivering bridge engineering schemes for more than 30 years throughout the UK. Our office, located at the heart of Birmingham City Centre, has multi-disciplinary transportation inspection, assessment and design capability in rail and highway schemes and works closely with other disciplines from the Highways, Rail, Geotechnical, Environment, Transport Planning and Development Sectors.

A selection of our current and recent projects includes –

SWTRA (South Wales Trunk Road Agent) – AECOM appointed as consultants for SWTRA provide engineering technical solutions to many aspects of the motorways, trunk roads and associated assets throughout the South Wales region. This framework provides a range of opportunities from inspection, assessment and design to technical advisory, strategic asset management and reactive maintenance. Recent schemes include concrete repairs, deck refurbishment, CS470 Management of sub-standard highway structures, Bridge Management Strategies and other various rehabilitation projects, the team are also supporting highways with several major maintenance projects.

Civils Assessment Framework Agreement (CAFA) – AECOM is appointed across nine rail routes for the framework contract. Birmingham supports various routes in undertaking Level 1 & Level 2 assessments of overbridges, footbridges and underbridges to a multitude of structural materials including steel, wrought-iron, cast-iron, pre-stressed concrete, masonry arches with structures ageing from 200 years old to modern construction forms. Our works involve: undertaking Inspection for Assessment to determine condition, loading and obtain dimensions of structures; structural analysis including grillages (Level 1) and Finite Element Analysis (Level 2) and reporting including sensitivity analysis and recommendations for further works.

Midlands Highways Alliance – Providing bridge assessment and design support to Network Improvements and Bridge Maintenance schemes for Wolverhampton and Walsall.

Forder Valley – Currently in construction, AECOM Birmingham designed a four span semi-integral prestressed concrete structure on behalf of Balfour Beatty work for Plymouth City Council over the Bircham Valley to connect Brest Road with the new large signalised junction of Forder Valley Road and Novorossiysk Road. The team continue to provide support and guidance throughout construction over the next 12 months.

Celtic Manor – AECOM recently completed a scheme to provide a second bridge over the M4 to provide additional traffic capacity in and out of the developing site, collaboratively with Celtic Manor Resort, Welsh Government and Alun Griffiths, the team developed and supported construction of a single 49.9m span integral composite steel box structure. AECOM in association with the delivery partners won the CEW Award for Integration & Collaborative Working

Heathrow – Currently working closely with HAL to provide inspection and investigation services to an ongoing large portfolio of existing bridges and structures.

As a Senior Bridge Engineer you will have the following daily responsibilities:

  • Take a leading role in the design of major civil engineering structures

  • Prepare designs under minimal supervision

  • Assist with the commercial and financial control of your project

  • Analysis and detailed design of road/rail bridges and other structures

  • Inspection, assessment and strengthening of road/rail bridges and other structures

  • Supervision of graduate engineers and technicians

  • Planning and project management.

  • Prepare, implement and assess contract documents

  • Report writing and production of technical reports and documents

Minimum Requirements

  • Experience with bridge and related structural inspection assessment and design schemes

  • Proven design and project management experience delivering to quality, time and budget

  • Experience in road and/or rail projects

  • High-level technical skills in current inspection, assessment and design

  • Previous exposure with clients of both national and local authorities, together with major contractors

  • Ability to manage staff and project Health and Safety responsibilities including compliance with CDM legislation

  • You will have a current clean driving license and be willing to travel throughout the UK to visit sites

  • Strong ability in finite element modelling.

  • Knowledge of Lusas and/or MIDAS is beneficial

  • Good working knowledge of the DMRB and Eurocode Standards is also required

Preferred Qualifications

  • Degree educated or equivalent in a relevant subject such as Bridge, Civil or Structural Engineering.

  • Ideally educated to MSc level or equivalent

  • Either a Chartered Engineer with ICE or IstructE, or close to completion
