System Architecture Engineer in Bristol, Bristol, United Kingdom
The successful candidate will be part of the team responsible for the development and management of the System Architecture for major project elements of the GWRM programme. The System Architecture Engineer will be required to capture both structural, functional and behavioral aspects within the architecture at an appropriate level of detail to provide stakeholder confidence, control the risk and visual the real needs of the project stakeholders, including staff, customers and end users.
This role will support the progressive assurance activities being provided across the Programme in demonstrating compliance with the project objectives through visualisation and tracking of compliance evidence to project teams, sponsor and other stakeholders.
DUTIES
The successful candidate will be reporting to the NR Principal Rail Systems Engineer or his representative and have the following day to day duties:
- Establish or deliver to the plans, methods, reports and tools for implementing a System Architecture for GWRM
- Engage with Stakeholders (i.e. Designers, DPEs, PMs) to understand their designs and abstract key elements and connectivity (boundaries) to build a System Architecture.
- Engage with interfacing projects to understand their designs and abstract key elements and connectivity to integrate with the GWRM System Architecture.
- Develop a suite of models, drawings, environments and other tools that capture and represent the key systems, subsystems, interfaces and interactions with the railway. The outputs from the model should allow GWRM to measure objectively the degree to which systems are correctly interfaced, connected, and included designs.
- Develop documentation that defines the scope, function, and configuration of systems to support the Test and Commissioning strategy and process.
- Assist in various analyses and support GWRM goal of delivering an integrated railway.
- Provide updates, reports and metics to inform on progress.
- Take necessary care to properly protect the confidentiality, integrity and availability of corporate information from unauthorised disclosure, modification or destruction. Never knowingly put GWRM or CH2M information or information systems at risk.
REQUIRED CRITERIA
Essential skills
- Knowledge and experience of system architecture development to support the various phases and lifecycles of the project drawing information from many diverse sources.
- Analytical skills, to critically evaluate the information gathered from multiple sources, reconcile conflicts, decompose high-level information into details/elements, abstract up from low-level information to a more general understanding, distinguish presented user requests from the underlying true needs, and distinguish solution ideas from requirements
- Interviewing skills, to talk with individuals and groups about their needs and ask the right questions to surface essential information
- Writing skills, to communicate information effectively to customers, marketing, managers, and technical staff
- Visualisation skills - ability to represent complicated systems and connectivity in clear and well presented and structured drawings and models.
- Ability to interface and work with (railway) domain specialists, design managers and construction project managers, in a competent professional manner
- Understanding of System Engineering lifecyles - awareness of different lifecycles and experience of implementation of lifecycles (GRIP/RIBA/Pathway etc..) approaches to real projects.
- Minimum 5 years practical experience acting as a system architecture engineer/System Architect.
- Qualified with a relevant technical degree level (Engineering/IT/Systems Engineering);
- Membership of professional body;
- Sound understanding of the context in which projects have to be delivered;
- Technically experienced in a diverse range of methods and techniques ;
- Understanding of core standards and their contextual application:
Desirable skills
- Demonstrable employment history and knowledge in System Architecture development, Assurance, Information Technology or data manipulation;
- Experience of major multidisciplinary projects with associated Rail and/or Urban locations;
- Track record of working with major stakeholders such as Network Rail, London Underground and Utility companies.
- Ability to apply requirements relevant to system architecture from ISO/IEC 15288 & 42010
- Ability to use Sparx Systems Enterprise Architect version 12
- Ability to use the Unified Modelling Language (UML) for system engineering purposes
