Purpose of the Job

As a part of the Systemwide Integration Facility (CIF) team; supporting the technical interactions with Bombardier Rolling Stock team, CIF contractor and the C610, C620, C660 and C631 contractor’s through ensuring the timely and effective management of the simulation tests; for design, planning, scripting and test case execution for a variety of pre-determined and agreed test scenarios to provide de-risking benefits and evidence.

Principal Accountabilities

The position is responsible for supporting the CIF Lead Test Engineer in delivering the following aspects of performance:

  • Interact with the contractor applications engineers, the project management team, the T&C team, the Chief Engineer’s Group (CEG), RfL and other affected stakeholders to develop a strong community understanding of the planning, preparation and project testing objectives for the CIF
  • Develop the design of the simulator create test conditions – through the management of a small team of test engineers – as well as overseeing the development of scenarios, scripts and cases to address the technical route train control system requirements
  • Oversee the use of existing tools and techniques to generate test scenarios; as well as build scripts and cases for the CIF, as a contribution to the testing & de-risking function
  • Perform the analysis of simulation test results.
  • Support the triaging and troubleshooting of technical problem issues arising from testing activity with the systemwide teams and Bombardier, utilising the CIF to drive towards root cause identification and resolution.
  • Document, record and escalate issues as appropriate, working in cooperation with the T&C team and the Technical Assurance Requirements Management and Configuration Management representatives, enlisting and assisting the CEG representation where required.
  • Support the “dynamic testing” team for deployment of test applications and perform “validation testing” on the CIF simulator during periods where no track access can be yielded.

Main challenges of the job

  • The CIF Test Engineer should be self-motivated, creative and proactive, able to work successfully in the fast-paced Systemwide environment.
  • It is expected that the CIF Test Engineer will have prior experience in a similar role and is able to work effectively with the available technologies and in the simulation test environment, controlling the conduct of the test simulations, checking outputs and managing the simulation test engineers.
  • The CIF Test Engineer will work closely with application engineers who work for the contractor, with Client and contractor project managers and project engineers, network architecture engineers and other stakeholders throughout the programme; ensuring the execution of test scripts (and iterations) based on agreed scenarios, tracking and reporting on all results, assisting with the troubleshooting and co-ordinating problem and defect resolution.
  • The individual should have a strong understanding of rail signalling and telecommunications processes the software and system engineering lifecycle and methodologies in the rail context.

Dimensions & Interfaces (both internal and external)

  • Reports to the Systemwide CIF Lead Test Engineer.
  • Also works closely with the T&C Team, the CEG team, the Station Delivery Team, the Systemwide Delivery Team, and the supporting functions (such as Safety, Quality, Environmental, Planning, etc.).

Person Specification

  • Knowledge of rail industry train control simulation and testing work processes.
  • Ability to effectively organise and manage a project team in a matrix organisation.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Project Control (including change control), including standard office tools, records, requirements and configuration management.
  • Understanding of engineering software and hardware requirements management and configuration control.
  • Understanding of the roles played by other departments on the programme, including basic construction practices; as well as the safety and economics aspects associated with realising, testing and commissioning of railway applications.
  • HNC/HND or Degree-level education in Electrical / Electronic / Computer Systems Engineering and 5+ years of relevant experience.
  • Strong reporting and communication skills
  • Detailed knowledge and understanding of the specialist language, equipment, tools, methodologies, products and processes used in train control and systems engineering aspects of railway systems.
  • Knowledge of the relevant CENELEC EN 501xx standards as they relate to railway systems.
  • Understanding of industry or regulatory codes and standards and design criteria pertinent to the train control, vital communications and rail signalling disciplines.
  • Rail experience which includes good testing and commissioning experience and preferably has included design experience
