Design Manager

Reporting To Contract Director

Responsible for The Management of a team of designers producing designs for electrical utility infrastructure .The role includes the management of a design team made up of electrical and civil designers designing electrical distribution infrastructure from Low voltage up to typically 132kV. The role involves the overall management of the team, compliance with standards, CDM regulations and acting as the Technical Authority for the business for design issues.

Key Duties

Managing the design team to ensure deadlines for design are met

Ensuring designs are delivered to budget

Applying quality control processes to designs ensuring clients/internal design processes are adhered to and products are of the correct quality. Produce cost estimates from first principles for design works

Project manage design requirements for projects, maintaining a design programme of works for each project and an overall design resource plan

Provide design support for key bid meetings

Maintain a training matrix for the design team, identifying professional development requirements and implement a training programme for individuals to undertake

Authorisation of civil, electrical and protection and control designs following internal review process

Interface management of designs between different disciplines

Management of subcontract design packages for non-core skill sets and for managing resource peaks.

Develop the design offering to meet the future needs of the business particularly in launching new business streams such as Multi utility, Heat networks and Grid level projects

Provide design input into tender responses

  • Carrying out designs for high voltage utility infrastructure specifically substations and cable system
  • Power system studies and their input into the design of systems including supply security, load and generation projects and how the output can impact on a project design
  • Team leader in an electrical design office carrying out HV designs
  • UK design standards
  • Costing of HV electrical design projects
  • Project management of HV design projects
  • Managing a team of multi-disciplined designers
  • UK DNO standards and approval procedures for Independent connections work
  • Writing technical specification
  • Carrying out of Power system studies
  • LV network design

Qualifications

  • Minimum Higher level qualification (HNC/D) in Electrical Engineering
  • Degree in Electrical Engineering
  • Management Qualification

Knowledge & Skills

  • Commercial awareness of the operation of contracts and contract risk
  • Appreciation of the full life cycle of HV electrical projects
  • Knowledge of the following design aspects
  • High Voltage substations (11-132kV)
  • Cable system design (LV – 132kV)
  • High Voltage system Protection and control
  • Temporary works process
  • Earthing and bonding
  • 275kV and above voltage levels
  • Civil Engineering
