Are you an experienced Lead Energy Engineer with experience in railway electrification or electrical power distribution sector who is looking to help shape the railway industry of the future?

Role and Responsibilities:

  • Provide a high level of understanding of Energy systems (primarily AC and DC electrification) and effective technical leadership, to ensure that the range of my clients work in this field (primarily standards activity and associated research) of medium complexity is of a high standard technically and satisfies the needs of internal and external stakeholders (including specialists in other fields).
  • Communicate effectively (internally and externally) on matters concerning Energy systems (primarily AC and DC electrification) in writing and in person to ensure that decisions can be reached, and issues can be understood and resolved by stakeholders (technical and non-technical).
  • Deliver Energy systems (primarily AC and DC electrification) expertise in forms including text-based documents, data, calculation and guidance, to ensure that timescales agreed with internal and external stakeholders are met.
  • Provide, as a GB expert, Energy systems (primarily AC and DC electrification) specialist input, to international electrotechnical standards bodies (e.g. CENELEC, IEC) and to ensure that the GB stakeholders' collective position is represented and communicated during standards development.
  • To build, manage and maintain effective relationships (internally and externally) to support efficient delivery of your Energy workload.
  • To ensure the quality and timely delivery of your Energy work and management of your workload. Note that 'Energy' includes electrification systems (overhead and third/fourth rail), AC and DC, alternative traction systems (principally the fixed part of these, the onboard is typically part of the rolling stock portfolio). This also includes the electrical and mechanical characteristics of these systems.
  • To ensure and that any difficulties or issues with your workload are highlighted to your line manager.
  • Ensuring, where appropriate, that industry agreed processes have been adhered to, as defined within the RSSB Business Management System (BMS).
  • Ensuring all products and services provided or facilitated by you are planned and delivered, where appropriate, within the associated timescales and to an acceptable quality.
  • Providing objective expert technical input and analysis, advice and quality checking as required and ensuring the work satisfies the expectations of the recipient in terms of scope and technical quality.
  • Ensuring that the level of quality review necessary for all work you are responsible for has been considered, documented and planned.
  • Supporting the project management team in ensuring project risks are anticipated, recorded, reviewed and mitigated through robust management and appropriate interventions and that any emerging issues are escalated to your line manager.
  • Ensuring all requests for advice and/or clarification are carefully considered and responded to objectively and in sufficient detail to satisfy the originator's enquiry. Where appropriate the input from the Professional Head of Energy should be sought.

Candidate skills required

  • An Engineer (Chartered or working towards Chartership) with relevant experience in railway electrification or with relevant experience from another domain (e.g. the electrical power distribution sector) and which can be used effectively within this role.
  • Educated to degree level or equivalent relevant experience.
  • An appreciation of the legal and regulatory framework in which Railway operates, including the Railways Interoperability Directive, Technical Specification for Interoperability for Energy, the Railways and Other Guided Transport Systems (Safety) Regulations and the Railway Group Standards Code and Standards Manual.
  • A Member of a recognised relevant professional body, such as the Institution of Engineering and Technology.
  • An effective leader with the ability to influence and bring others (individuals and groups) on-board.
  • Ability to collaborate with a diverse range of individuals and groups, and to build effective stakeholder relationships and networks.
  • Clear thinker with strong analytical skills and experience, including the ability to analyse and interpret information, identify problems and formulate solutions
  • Strong communications skills (particularly written and verbal) and ability to communicate information and ideas appropriately.
  • A flexible approach including to problem solving and organisational change.
  • Well organised with the ability to diligently follow directions and procedures, and plan-ahead even when working under pressure.
  • Evidence of self-development and seeking out learning opportunities.
