RS & D Interface Engineer
Purpose of the Job
To provide engineering support to the Rolling Stock and Depot (RS&D) team with particular regard to interfaces between Rolling Stock and infrastructure, and between the Depot and adjoining parts of the national network.
Principal Accountabilities
- Support the Rolling Stock and Depot Principal Engineer in the development and documentation of interfaces between rolling stock and infrastructure: maintain the Train/Infrastructure Interface Specification (TIIS) ensuring it is updated as necessary to reflect the agreed position between Network Rail (NR) regarding the rolling stock interface.
- Review contractors’ detailed designs for Driver Only Operation (DOO) installations at stations, expediting the reconciliation of conflicting requirements and ensuring compatibility with the overall system provided by the rolling stock supplier.
- Define and monitor the progress of necessary works to enable gauge clearance of Rolling Stock: co-ordinate the detailed development of the Platform Edge Door interface between train, signalling and platform equipment including testing arrangements for the integrated system.
- Define and secure agreement to operational arrangements to facilitate Route Compatibility of the Rolling Stock, representing the RS&D team in GRIP and stage gate reviews for all on-Network and Central Section works impacting on rolling stock and likely to affect Route Compatibility of the rolling stock.
- Represent the RS&D team in discussions relating to the technical aspects of GSM-R and ETCS implementation and ensuring that the rolling stock supplier is kept informed of relevant developments.
- Support the Senior Project Manager (Old Oak Common Depot) to ensure that the technical interfaces between Old Oak Common and adjoining NR infrastructure, and with the train are documented and concluded.
- Ensure that the flow of technical information between parties in respect of interface development is timely, accurate and in accordance with overall project programmes: act as convenor of the interdepartmental review meeting for interfaces affecting Rolling Stock and Depot.
- Undertake design reviews of the rolling stock Supplier’s technical proposals with particular regard to elements that interface with other systems.
- Review testing programmes relating to interfaces and ensure that assurance requirements are satisfied and witness test activities on behalf of RfL, on site or at the rolling stock supplier’s premises or test facilities.

Main challenges of the job
- Ensuring emerging Infrastructure Designs, and their implementation, are optimised for the Rolling Stock and compliant with agreed interface specifications.
- Enabling the Rolling Stock Supplier to demonstrate compatibility with infrastructure in an efficient and effective manner.
- Developing and approving test programmes and assurance procedures in respect of infrastructure compatibility.
- Communication of interface matters to members of the Operations Directorate and beyond using clear dialogue and concise reports.
Person Specification
- Degree qualified engineer.
- Hold, or be working towards, a professional qualification in civil engineering, rolling stock engineering (mechanical or electrical) or an associated discipline.
- A good knowledge of development, design and / or implementation of major projects.
- A good knowledge of railway operation and railway signalling.
- Understanding of traction power systems and rolling stock energy efficiency.
- A good knowledge of Railway Group Standards, Technical Specifications for Interoperability and other laws and standards applicable to rolling stock and its interfaces with infrastructure.
- Understanding of project control processes.
- Understanding of cost management and contracts.
