Your new role

Reporting to the Engineering Manager, the Shift Support Engineers will play a pivotal role supporting the maintenance team when issues arise at our Train Maintenance Centres (TMC). We are recruiting 8 positions in total, 4 at our North Pole TMC in West London and 4 at our Stoke Gifford TMC near Bristol. The incumbent must have the ability to work on a 24/7 shift pattern.

In this exciting new role you will be responsible for investigation of maintenance and safety related vehicle defects and subsequent engineering solutions. The shift support engineer will ensure contractual reliability targets are achieved and maintenance practices implemented and continuously improved. They will also be responsible for those activities relating to design modifications and subsequent applications for customer and regulatory approval for changes.

Specifically, you will be responsible for the following deliverables:

  • Lead and direct the maintenance shift with regards to engineering issues and governance.
  • Imbedded into the maintenance shift to provide engineering support to the maintenance team.
  • In partnership with the maintenance team and planning cell provide support for engineering concessions and dispensations within the set level of authority.
  • Support the shift Engineering Planner and Duty Shift Manager with all engineering issues to enable them to continually deliver a safe, reliable passenger service.
  • Responsible for designing solutions to vehicle issues to improve reliability and availability of the fleet
  • Lead in the development of documented engineering procedures, practices and policies
  • Assist in optimising the Company’s maintenance regime and in the development of best European / World Class maintenance practice in support of current and future contracts
  • Assist maintenance with in-depth faults, passing on fault finding skills and the use of schematics on rolling stock assets
  • Assist in the co-ordination of continuous improvement programmes to improve fleet reliability and ensure contractual requirements are achieved and exceeded
  • Responsible for liaising with other Hitachi departments in the investigation of maintenance and safety defects and ensuring compliance with UK legislative requirements
  • To liaise with Procurement / Maintenance Team members during the assessment and approval of new/changed material and suppliers to ensure that Maintenance, H & S and environmental needs are adequately identified / addressed
  • To confirm that rolling stock assets comply with operational specifications by the use of engineering processes and techniques
  • Production of Safety Case reports / documentation in liaison with Engineering Manager, Production Managers and Business Assurance Manager
  • Liaison with Hitachi and external stake holders and suppliers as required to complete the duties of the post
  • Develop professionally and support good working relationships
  • Learn new skills in accordance with Hitachi’s business demands as required
  • Assist the maintenance team and undertake activities as instructed by the Duty Shift Manager

Qualifications

  • Creative, collaborative and solution oriented

Qualifications

  • HND in an engineering discipline or equivalent qualified engineer
  • Previous experience in reliability engineering on UK rolling stock. Preferred will be experience with train networks and diagnostics
  • Membership of a recognised accredited engineering body (preferred).
  • Must be proficient in full suite of Microsoft Office (excel, word, powerpoint)
