Signalling Project Engineer (ETCS) in Paddington, Westminster, London, United Kingdom
Network Rail is modernising the infrastructure between London Paddington and Heathrow to enhance service performance and introduce new train fleets. One of the key elements of this modernisation is the replacement of the signalling system with ETCS (European Train Control System) which provides in cab signalling with improved safety and performance along the route.
We are looking for a Project Engineer to work on the first phase of this modernisation, which is being delivered as part of the wider Network Rail programme to enhance the infrastructure between Paddington and Heathrow to support the introduction of the new Crossrail train services in 2018. This will be delivered in two stages; Heathrow Tunnel Stage A and Heathrow to Paddington Stage B/C by 2019.
What you will do:
The Project Engineer will be responsible for producing design information required by colleagues responsible for the integration of ETCS with conventional signalling and contractors involved in the application of ETCS. The role requires a broad knowledge of signal engineering and a detailed understanding of European Rail Traffic Management Systems (ERTMS/ETCS).
You will be responsible for:
- Implement Network Rail systems and procedures to maintain a cost effective, high quality, safe and environmentally responsible approach to design, construction, commissioning and other technical activities on ETCS projects, compliant with all relevant legislation. Liaise with others as appropriate.
- Contribute to the production and maintenance of ETCS engineering requirements and the subsequent test and verification activities.
- Undertake specific system design activities relating to the application of ETCS.
- Provide technical support in the definition of technical interfaces with neighbouring systems.
- Provide professional guidance to other team members in the detailed application of ETCS.
- Participate in reviews of design submissions by specialist consultants and contractors.
- Provide advice to project management in respect of all construction activities, including testing and commissioning and site supervision. Manage so that the design and/or construction elements of relevant projects meet the requirements of current legislation, including construction design management (CDM) regulations.
- Represent the project team as required in meetings with external stakeholders and assessment bodies.
- Provide support to team members responsible for defining operational rules and procedures and respond as appropriate to any emerging user interface and implied functional requirements.
Essential
- Technical qualifications to HNC/HND (or equivalent GNVQ level) or degree.
- Knowledge of railway signalling and control systems, particularly in the field of ETCS or related systems.
- Membership of a relevant professional institution
- Knowledge of systems engineering methods, including requirements management and production of engineering specifications
- Knowledge of engineering safety management and quality assurance
- Proven ability to produce high quality engineering reports, including any first principles supporting investigations and analysis
