About the role

As an Environment and Sustainability Advisor with Balfour Beatty, you’ll be a key member of our Health, Safety, Environment and Sustainability team, reporting to the HSESProject Partner.

This is a varied role and you will be involved in setting clear expectations with customers as to what will happen next, when it will happen, what it will look like, who may be on site at different times etc. Lead on the management of on-site communications, issues and complaints.

Lead on Social Performance managing the projects social risks and opportunities, attend planning meetings to agree focus areas for communications to ensure on site communications are within 14days of start of works as well as provide support to the Safety & Sustainability Project Partner and support winning business teams with environment and sustainability, (including social value) responses for bids and PQQs.

Accountabilities

• Manage the development and delivery of the project specific Community Involved Plan, incorporating the objectives of business-wide sustainability policies and the Sustainability Blueprint
• Monitor and report on all aspects of community engagement including complaints, requests for information, letters sent and received etc.
• Provide wording for project communications to local residents on upcoming project work and scope
• Be the link between the project PR and stakeholder engagement representative and the Balfour Beatty delivery team
• Keep a record of all communications made to the community (notification of works letters / resident’s forums / complaint follow-up communications)
• Hold monthly Community Relations meetings with the project HSES team and Balfour Beatty delivery team to discuss complaints and upcoming areas of sensitivity
• Support the project in the close out of all complaints relative to the project
• Communicate to the delivery team effectively, the community limitations of each work area
• Develop and maintain suitable and regular statistical and performance reporting. Monitor progress against targets
• Complete monthly reporting of project environmental KPI’s and Involved Plan via the Sustainability Portal
• Support the wider business community investment programme; develop and maintain a bespoke Involved Plan for the project
• Produce environmental and sustainability case studies on best practice

The following qualities/experience are essential:

• Associate Member of the Institute of Environmental Management & Assessment (or equivalent)
• Relevant environmental or sustainability degree
• Strong communication and influencer skills
• Held previous role in environment, public interface /community relations / social value
• Ability to lead meetings with the client to discuss and implement action planning in response to complaints
• Robust and consistent record keeping.
• Strong organisational skills with good working knowledge of Microsoft Excel.

The following qualities/experience are desirable:

• Ability to seek out and deliver innovative methods of training and instruction, together with adaptive styles of communication with the workforce and staff alike
• Understanding of the Section 61 application/consent process
• Understanding of socio-economics (social-value / social-performance)
