THE ROLE
We are looking for an experienced Discipline Lead (Civils) to join our growing engineering team in Birmingham. If you are a committed and ambitious engineer who can demonstrate strong leadership and interpersonal skills combined with commercial awareness and the ability to play their part in growing a dynamic high performance team then we want to hear from you.
DUTIES WILL INCLUDE:
- Ensuring that competent civil engineering resources are available for the successful delivery of single and multi-disciplinary design projects. Technically sound design solutions are produced, including all associated reporting and cost estimating, to programme and within budget
- Management of overall discipline capability in the UK.
- Responsible for the discipline strategy, recruitment and development of staff
- Maintaining competence framework
- Ensuring that staff are competent and, where necessary, licenced to undertake the level of engineering required on any individual project
- Developing the discipline competencies in line with the predicted workload of projects and the future value propositions being evolved
- Providing direction and leadership to deliver planned growth, development, recruitment, training and mentoring of staff
- Accountable for ensuring that competent resource is provided to develop the pipeline for the Service
- Developing and implementing processes to improve efficiency and effectiveness in the delivery, and the quality, of engineering reports and designs within their discipline and on individual projects
- Responsible for the Management and maintenance of Link Up approval in all relevant discipline categories
- When required, to undertake the roles of Contractors Responsible Engineer (CRE), Task Manager, Designer, Checker or Approver for all various types of civil design.
- Delivery of work to programme, budget and specification.
- Client and third party liaison.
- Establishment of internal design standards and/or processes to achieve a continuous improvement in quality and efficiency.
- Prepare and check engineering designs, calculations, and oversee production
- Ensure compliance with relevant health, safety and environmental legislation, particularly the CDM Regulations
- Acting as Discipline Lead within the Technical Directorate and maintain and support Production Centres in the wider Group
TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN THIS ROLE YOU WILL HAVE:
- BEng/MEng degree in Civil Engineering (or similar)
- Professionally Qualified Chartered (CEng) Engineer
- ICE Supervising Civil Engineer
- Experienced based skills in civil engineering within major infrastructure projects
- Understanding of multi-disciplinary co-ordination across major infrastructure projects and global design teams.
- Excellent communication skills dealing with clients, suppliers, developers, consultants, elected representatives and the public
- Client focused approach to service delivery
- Ability to lead and inspire technical excellence
- Experience in the production and delivery of technical papers and delivery of technical seminars
- The ability to lead and develop engineers.
- An understanding of multi-disciplinary co-ordination across major infrastructure projects and global design teams.
- Excellent analytical and problem solving skills
- Experienced in the use of civil / structural software design packages
- Ability to produce Engineering designs and associated reports.
- Previous experience in working with, Eurocodes, British Standards, Technical Specification for Interoperability, Railway Standards and knowledge of guidance available from industry research bodies such as CIRIA, Concrete Council etc
- Experience of Prevention through Engineering Design including Designers responsibilities under CDM
- Engineering design production utilising BIM
