Environmental Discipline Lead in Birmingham, West Midlands, United Kingdom

SYSTRA are looking to expand our Signature Team in the UK, working on high profile infrastructure projects such as Crossrail and HS2, we are building on our 50 years of success in the UK by growing our team and looking for passionate people to deliver projects across our portfolio.

We are now seeking to strengthen and grow our Engineering team in our Birmingham office, initially working as part of our Main Works Civils High Speed 2 project team, by recruiting an experienced Environmental Discipline Lead.

The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate a range of experience within the Civil Engineering/Transportation/Infrastructure sectors.

Main Duties

  • A key role that underpins the growth of our dynamic, high performing UK delivery organisation, blending technical and commercial awareness with strong communication and people management skills
  • Inspire technical excellence within the discipline
  • Responsible for setting the technical baseline and standards against which production is delivered
  • Responsible for assessing and instructing technical change
  • Responsible for defining guidance for methods and process and standardisation of design inputs and outputs to ensuring that technically sound and consistent solutions are produced across the project
  • Assess and ensure competent resources are deployed in the discipline
  • Leadership of technical safety within the discipline, including mastering of regulations such as CDM requirements, and industry best practice such as safe by design and health by design (prevention through engineering design).
  • Ensure compliance with relevant health, safety and environmental legislation in the discipline
  • Ensure compliance with Eurocodes, British Standards, Technical Specification for Interoperability, Railway Standards and knowledge of guidance available from industry research bodies
  • Develop and implement processes to improve efficiency and effectiveness in the delivery, and the quality, of output within the discipline and on individual projects
  • Responsible for the management and maintenance of accreditations and approvals (eg. RISQS) in all relevant discipline categories associated with the discipline
  • Ownership of internal design standards and/or processes to achieve a continuous improvement in quality and efficiency.
  • Maintain strong working relationships, communication, knowledge sharing, innovation sharing with SYSTRA resource centres around the world and our industry partners and supply chain
  • Identify and grow a sustainable pipeline of opportunities in the discipline and support the sales team for larger multi-disciplinary opportunities
  • Client engagement to provide a deeper understanding of future needs and to position SYSTRA in the UK market
  • Participate in industry events to engage with new Clients and Partners
  • Maintaining an up to date understanding of market drivers, developments in discipline and key innovations in discipline
  • Thought leadership – production of internal/external thought leadership and knowledge sharing papers relevant to the discipline
  • Acting as external ‘figurehead’ and technical expert in discipline
  • Line Management of internal staff within the discipline - Act as discipline figurehead, demonstrating visible leadership
  • Management of the capability and experience of the UK discipline team
  • Management of the health, safety and wellbeing of staff in the discipline
  • Responsible for the discipline strategy, recruitment, training and development of staff
  • Maintaining a competence framework for the discipline as part of a wider SYSTRA Ltd competence matrix
  • Safety leadership in the discipline, ensuring monthly cascades are attended, championing close call reporting, demonstrating openness and commitment to improve safety
  • Identification of tools, processes, IT and software requirements in the discipline and standardisation wherever possible in line with major project requirements. Production of business cases where significant investment is required.
  • Resourcing of bids and projects and utilisation/productivity of the discipline

Experience

  • Experience in leading environmental specialists and working in a multidisciplinary engineering design team
  • Experience of relevant legislation and ensure designs are compliant with the UK and EU requirements.
  • Experience in managing EIA's, environmental permitting, consents and licensing
  • Experience in client and stakeholder management
  • Full Member of IEMA (MIEMA, Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv), equivalent professional engineering membership or technical lead
  • Software - knowledge of GIS software
  • Specialist knowledge in several environmental disciplines
