The Control Centre Product Development Team based at Radlett, design and develop high reliability and availability railway control system products. These consist of both modular and stand-alone products that are used to build control and infrastructure interfacing systems for deployment by the project delivery team.
These products are taken from concept through to deployment, complying with UK and European standards, with design for both hardware and software. To meet the increasing demands for redesign and introduction of new technologies, the development team capacity is being increased.
POSITION OVERVIEW
The role incorporates the design, and development of safety related railway control systems and infrastructure interfacing products using digital, computer and analogue designs supporting network (802.11) and serial RS232/422/485 communications
This position gives the opportunity to further develop existing abilities and knowledge within electronics, software, computer based products and operating systems, system level design, communications protocols and power distribution. The nature of the UK railway continually provides challenges requiring different solutions and in this role you will be expected to take a leading role in the design and development of projects from initial concept through to production.
Occasional visits to client site offices, control centres and trackside locations will be required, in addition to providing technical support to the project delivery team.
The Control Centre Products are the key enabler to high value project delivery, working to fixed timescales. Working closely with the other team members and reporting to the Control Centre Product Manager you will need to be flexible, motivated and able to determine requirements meeting both functional and standards compliance.
You’ll be:
- Creating requirements and test specifications
- Circuit designing, PCB design and testing and/or Software Design, Coding and testing
- Required to fault-find PCBs both during the product development and production stages
- Required to assist in the maintenance of existing hardware and software
- Resolving product and product application problems
- Product EMC and LVD compliance
- Assisting with product approval
- Occasional client site work to support installation and commissioning

You’ll need to be educated to degree/HNC level in an electronic/computing discipline and developed proven skills and experience across several industry sectors.
You’ll have:
- Analogue and digital circuit design and diagnosis experience
- Proficiency in mixed signal hardware design and PCB layout (Altium preferred)
- Sound knowledge of design for EMC compliance
- Sound Knowledge of EMC testing
- Sound knowledge of power distribution design to BS7671, especially IT
- Proficiency in C programming or understanding C and proficient in another language with respect to Windows™
- Windows™ Driver development
- Knowledge of Intel® 64 & IA 32 architecture
- Embedded Windows™ OS development and deployment
- Communications protocol implementation and development
- Embedded Microcontroller programming
- Design of bespoke test equipment
- Knowledge of industry standards and procedures for software design, coding and management. eg. CENELEC, MISRA
- A background in Physics would be beneficial to this role.
