Technical Author (Operations & Maintenance Manuals)
Purpose of the Job
To author Operations & Maintenance Manuals (O&Ms) from information provided from various contractors with the supply chain. To review O&Ms provided by contractors and provide constructive feedback and/or revise the manuals as required.
To produce said documents in line with technical requirements.
Principal Accountabilities
Support the Employer in relation to the following:
- Support and facilitate the delivery of the Operations & Maintenance Manuals in line with the Employer’s information requirements, specifications and handover of all formally released/issued O&M deliverables.
- Produce O&M manuals and revise these manuals to satisfactory level by addressing all comments from the Central Team and IMs.
- Identify concerns and possible solutions to the O&M Delivery Lead, participate in meetings with reviewers to agree on resolutions and liaise with Field Assurance Engineers, designers, and construction team when necessary to resolve issues.
- Ensure that O&M manuals authored reference Asset Database and reflect the as built conditions.
- Make sure that all technical information including Health and Safety information, hazard assessment, spares and equipment, warranty, drawings, certification, legacy design etc. are presented in a consistent manner.
- Liaise with the Asset Data team to identify and resolve any non-conformances with the asset data to get the asset data referenced correctly in O&Ms.
- Peer-review O&M manuals produced by others to ensure that quality requirements are met.
- Understand IMs' needs for pre-handover deliverables regarding O&Ms
- Be a first point of contact to the Contractors for O&M queries, requests and educating them in the necessary requirements for compliance with the provided templates.
- Provide data as requested for progress/KPI reporting.

Main challenges of the job
This post will require the jobholder to be work flexibly and they may be required to be split their working hours between the project offices and home.
Build relationships with the Asset Team and the Delivery Team.
To Support contractors with the provision of O&M information.
Person Specification
Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline (Mechanical, Electrical, Public Health, Premises, Civil or Structural) is highly desirable.
Proven and practical experience of technical authoring of O&Ms in a large organisation or a large multi-disciplined project, with multiple contracts and stakeholders’ interests.
Good knowledge of Asset Data and data management systems and process within engineering and construction organizations
Competent and comfortable processing large volumes of data following predefined processes and methodologies
Experience in the delivery of railway station mechanical, electrical and public health (MEP) systems and detailed knowledge of the O&M manual writing.
Knowledge of LU, RfL and/or NR environment and relevant processes and procedures. A good understanding of Assurance in a rail environment is desirable (e.g. LU Standard S1538).
Proactive management - actively chasing people to get actions closed out and to supply requirements.
Team player with positive “can do” attitude.
Good experience of using typical MS office computer applications, such as MS Word, Excel, Office & Outlook.
Excellent communication, especially technical writing skills, interpersonal skills who can liaise with staff within the company, Contractor teams and 3rd Party Organisations.
Able to work collaboratively to achieve common goals across different organisations.
Ability to implement actions and tasks within a project team in a matrix organization.
Ability and determination to devise and follow procedures and challenge others to do so rigorously.
Analytical skills and ability to identify and present key messages and risks arising from that analysis.
