Senior Assessment Bridge Engineer in Birmingham, West Midlands, United Kingdom

We are currently recruiting for a Senior Assessment and Asset Management Bridge Engineer in our centrally located Birmingham office.

Our Birmingham office has an established track record of successfully delivering bridge engineering schemes for more than 30 years across the Midlands but also across the UK and internationally. Our office, located at the heart of Birmingham City Centre, has multi-disciplinary transportation capability of design, assessment, rehabilitation and strengthening in rail and highway schemes and works closely with other disciplines from the Geotechnical, Environment, Transport Planning and Development Sectors.

A selection of our current and recent projects includes –

SWTRA (South Wales Trunk Road Agent) – AECOM have been appointed as a delivery partner to SWTRA with a responsibility of providing engineering technical solutions to motorways, trunk roads and associated assets throughout the Central South Wales region. Specific tasks include structural assessments, bridge management plans, general, principal and specialist inspections, parapet upgrades, concrete repairs, emergency repairs and general renewal and asset management.

Network Rail CAFA (Civil Assessment Framework Agreement) – AECOM have been appointed to this nationwide framework across numerous routes, including LNW, LNE, Scotland, Kent and Anglia to undertake inspections for assessment and subsequently detailed structural analysis of bridges and structures using various analysis techniques, including non-linear finite elements. Our portfolio covers bridges across the UK, various material types such as concrete, wrought and cast iron and structural ages from 1852 until today.

MHA (Midlands Highway Alliance) - AECOM have been delivering MHA, a £30-million Professional Services Partnership (PSP) for the last 3.5 years, the contract offers multidisciplinary professional design services across over 20 different Local Authorities. Work includes inspection, assessment and design for a range of bridges and structures.

LoHAC (London Highway Alliance Contract) - AECOM were appointed by Transport for London (TfL) as Contractor-Consultant Maintaining Agent responsible for maintenance of all of the TfL Road Network in North West London through a joint venture with FM Conway. AECOM have been delivering many schemes, ranging from subway refurbishments, footbridge repairs and reconstruction, expansion joint & bearing replacements, parapet upgrades, deck re-waterproofing as well as complete bridge refurbishment schemes and full replacement of a multi-span flyover deck.

Other projects executed by our wider Birmingham Bridges & Structures team include but are not limited to the following:

  • HS2 Phase 2B;
  • AMCO – CP5 design & build rail schemes in LNW;
  • Heathrow/Gatwick/Birmingham airports asset management;
  • Arlington Memorial Bridge rehabilitation (USA);
  • South Capitol Bridge (USA);
  • Al Maktoum Bridges – inspection, assessment & rehabilitation (UAE);
  • M4 Malpas Viaduct – assessment, repairs, rehabilitation & site supervision;
  • New bridge over the M4 motorway in Wales;
  • Forder Valley Viaduct;

As a Senior Engineer you will have the following daily responsibilities:

  • Take a leading role in the assessment and asset management practices of major civil engineering structures.
  • Undertake assessments for both Highway and Rail structures under minimal supervision, while also having the capability to mentor and guide technically junior members of staff.
  • Assist with the commercial and financial control of your project.
  • Supervision of graduate/assistance engineers and technicians.
  • Prepare, check and review Approval in Principle documents and Assessment Reports.
  • Report writing and production of technical reports and documents.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Experience with bridge and related structural inspection and assessment.
  • Proven project experience delivering to quality, time and budget.
  • Experience in road and/or rail projects.
  • High level of technical skills in structural assessment including concrete and steel structures.
  • Previous exposure with client’s Technical Approval Authority within either national or local authorities.
  • You will have a current clean driving license and be willing to travel throughout the UK to visit sites where applicable for inspection or investigation.
  • Knowledge of LUSAS/MIDAS.
  • Good working knowledge of DMRB or Network Rail inspection and assessment standards and Eurocode Standards.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Degree educated or equivalent in a relevant subject such as Bridge, Civil or Structural Engineering.
  • Ideally educated to MSc level or equivalent.
  • Professionally qualified with ICE or IstructE, or close to completion.
