The Science and Technology Facilities Council based in Harwell, Didcot, is looking for Mechanical Designers to join the team for a period of 6 months with potential extension.

The ideal candidate will have strong CAD / SolidEdge Design experience. You will be responsible for modifying existing designs as well as designing from scratch. Any candidates with a background in pressure systems, vacuum, water, gas, electrical experience - please apply!
JOB DESCRIPTION
The CLF is a world leading laser facility, which provides scientists from the UK and Europe with an unparalleled range of state-of-the-art laser technology. The Central Laser Facility's Engineering Division provides mechanical engineering solutions to enable laser scientists and users to utilise the technology for experimental research & development programmes fully.
The Centre for Advance Laser Technologies and Applications (CALTA) is a department within CLF that focuses on developing and supplying laser systems as part of commercial or collaborative international projects. The CALTA team have a range of projects underway at various stages of completion and require additional design effort ensure timely completion.
The role of mechanical designer is required to undertake mechanical design on complex optical and pressure systems. The activities include upgrading an existing design to meet a revised specification and undertaking all detail design and drawing necessary to enable components to be manufactured and assembled.
The mechanical designer shall use 3D CAD to produce all models and drawings. The mechanical designer shall report directly to the Engineering manager who shall direct and prioritise all tasks. The designer will work within the existing design team.
Responsibilities will include:
* Determining design specifications in collaboration with stakeholders
* Concept and detail design of mechanical components and assemblies
* Ensuring safety of designs throughout project lifecycle
SKILLS AND ATTRIBUTES
It is essential that the candidate:
* Can operate Solid Edge ST9 to produce engineering models and manufacturing drawings
* Has a good understanding of mechanical engineering principles
* Has experience of mechanical design and producing manufacturing drawings
* Reliable and hardworking
* Good communication skills
It is desirable that the candidate also has experience in one or more of the following areas:
* Pressure systems and the Pressure Equipment Directive
* Vacuum systems
* Gas systems
* Cryogenic systems
