Mechanical Fitters
A large number of Mechanical Fitters are required to work on a long term prestigious contract for a large rail company which will run until December 2018.
Start dates
There will be starts on this project from early July through to early September.
Shifts
The vast majority of people will work day shifts, Monday to Friday, and work 48 hours per week. However there will be a requirement for around 10 people to work night shifts. This will be defined during the project mobilisation. Please also note during the start of the project the working hours may not be the full 48 per week during induction and training periods and are likely to be circa 40 hours per week.
Start and finish times
On day shifts you will work 06:00 - 16:00 Monday to Thursday and 06:00 until 14:00 on a Friday. Night shift times are still to be agreed but will start from 22:00.
Rates
The rate of pay for working days is £14.82 per hour.
The rate of pay for working night shifts is £16.01 per hour. However please note this is only paid for when you start work at 22:00 or work beyond this time on your shift.
Purpose of the Job
To work as a member of a team to service, maintain, repair and overhaul fleet locomotives, coaching stock and equipment, including the latest generation in train technology to laid down specifications.
As part of a team, ensure that the fleet is serviced and maintained in a safe, efficient and cost effective manner whilst constantly seeking to improve quality.
Responsibilities
- Work as directed by and in co-operation with the Production Manager, will comply with:
- All depot protection procedures
- Understand and abide to safety notices, rules and regulations and follow safe working practices, H & S.A.W. and C.O.S.H.H.
- Will adhere to and work within Quality Systems to the current standard.
- Work as part of a team, complete or assist in any of the team's activities to ensure work is completed on time to specification.
- Will be responsible for:
- Routine exam work
- Routine primary fault finding (to level of competency)
- Component exchange
- Stores provision
- When trained able to carry out coach repairing tasks, plumbing, electrical/mechanical tasks, welding/burning/brazing.
- Will be capable of accepting training in other skills and carry out duties, e.g. forklift, road vehicle driving (if certified), attend call-outs and breakdowns if required.
- Will carry out final work and process inspections as required.
- Will carry out Team Member C duties as required if assessed competent.
- Cover Operations Co-Ordinator role (if level of competence required is met after voluntary training)
- Will use IT systems that are work related.
- Will attend call-outs and breakdowns if required if trained competent.
- With other team members, will maintain good housekeeping systems of work areas.
Educational Requirements
- Educated to GCSE standard
- Time served apprenticeship or equivalent with associated technical qualifications (City & Guilds, SVQ, NVQ) or recognised equivalent in Mechanical Engineering.
Desired Knowledge / Experience
- Practical knowledge and experience of mechanical and/or electrical engineering
- Experience of working to procedures, work instructions and vehicle maintenance instructions
- Experience of working on one of the following is essential for this role: rolling stock, aircraft, HGVs, busses, coaches, automotive vehicles, ships or military vehicles.
