Mechanical Fitters
Mechanical Fitters are required to work on a long term, prestigious contract for Alstom Transport on the H5 Project which will run until December 2018. This is a great opportunity to gain rail experience on one of the most technologically advanced trains in the UK. The role could lead on to further opportunities within the rail industry or permanent roles with my client.

No previous rail experience is required for this role. The ability to be able to follow processes, work from instructions and previous experience and the ability to use a torque wrench is however essential.
Start dates
We are looking for people to start immediately on the project.
Hours
On this project they work mainly days but there is also a requirement to work nights from time to time so you will need to have a flexible attitude towards this.
On days they work 48 hours per week and start at 6:00 AM and finish at 16:00 Monday to Thursday and on a Friday they finish at around 14:00.
On nights they work four 12 hour shifts, Monday to Thursday and start at 18:00 and finish at 06:00 AM.
Breaks
Your breaks are included within the 48 hours and are paid. Each week you can expect to have circa 4.5 hours in paid breaks.
Rates
The rate of pay for working days is £14.82 per hour.
The rate of pay for working night shifts is £15.86 per hour.
Retainer Payment
For every hour you work on the project we will accrue £0.35 per hour on top of your pay rate which will be paid out to contractors who complete the project, minus any missing tooling costs. If you start on the project in November you can expect to accrue approximately £875 in the retainer payment. This will be paid out when the project completes in December 2018, so it will be a nice bonus just before Christmas!
Purpose of the Job
To work as a member of a team to service, maintain, repair and overhaul fleet locomotives, coaching stock and equipment, including the latest generation in train technology to laid down specifications.
As part of a team, ensure that the fleet is serviced and maintained in a safe, efficient and cost effective manner whilst constantly seeking to improve quality.
Educational Requirements
- Educated to GCSE standard
- Time served apprenticeship or equivalent with associated technical qualifications (City & Guilds, SVQ, NVQ) or recognised equivalent in Mechanical Engineering. Candidates with relevant heavy mechanical engineering experience will also be considered.
Desired Knowledge / Experience
- Practical knowledge and experience of mechanical engineering
- Experience of working to procedures and work instructions
- Experience of working in heavy engineering is preferred for this role and we regularly take candidates from the following industries: rolling stock, aircraft, HGVs, busses, coaches, automotive vehicles, ships or military vehicles.
