Senior Engineer - Mechanical Equipment (Brakes)

Location: SNC Lavalin House, Derby

Job Description
The Mechanical Equipment Team comprises of specialist engineers with expertise in systems and techniques associated with bogies, vehicle running gear and transmissions. These include components such as wheelsets, bearings, gearboxes, brake equipment and brake systems, and also relevant subject areas such as welding, NDT, brake performance analysis and risk assessment. The team’s focus is on bringing our expertise to bear in solving problems for clients in a practical and cost-effective way.

The Senior Engineer for Mechancial Equipment (Brakes) will be responsible for providing strategic, engineering and technological solutions in the area of vehicle brake engineering to help our clients and SNC-Lavalin Rail & Transit succeed.

You will utilize the expertise of the Team and its combined diverse skills and experience, to maintain and enhance its position as the foremost team globally in consultancy services for railway vehicle engineering.

You will also be responsible for the management of individual project scopes, budgets, timescales and technical accuracy to ensure SNC-Lavalin provides excellent client service on commercially successful assignments.

Essential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
This role will report to the Team Leader, Mechanical Equipment. The main duties include:

• Deliver and manage a range of assignments
• Work with clients to resolve technical problems and design challenges
• Support the development of junior staff through mentoring and task based assistance;
• Support the continuous improvement of SNC-Lavalin’s technical capability;
• Working independently and as part of larger assignment teams to deliver accurate and timely results to our clients;
• Undertaken the checking and approval of the work of other staff as part of robust quality management;
• Work closely with the Section Heads to ensure a consistent approach and facilitate management of interdisciplinary projects.

Requirements
Key skills and experience required for success in this role:

• Expertise in vehicle braking systems;
• Good project management capability and the ability to work to tight deadlines;
• Proven relationships with successful delivery of assignments to clients;
• Excellent communication and presentation skills, and the ability to write clear and concise text;
• Familiarity with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint);
• The ability to present the principles of this subject area to clients and colleagues in a clear and concise manner such that the non-specialist can make informed decisions on the most appropriate actions;
• The ability to work as part of a wider team within SNC-Lavalin;
• The ability to assess project risks and how they can be managed (including technical, contractual and financial risks).

Essential Skills & Experience:

• A degree, or equivalent in a relevant engineering discipline;
• A Chartered Engineer, or actively working towards Chartership of a relevant Professional Engineering Body;
• Relevant rolling stock experience;
• Experience in applying relevant national and international railway vehicle braking standards and codes of practice.
• He/she will have a track record that demonstrates dedication and commitment.

Desirable Skills and Experience;

• Leadership skills – ability to lead small teams through complex assignments
• Problem solving skills
• Ability to clearly communicate with clients and colleagues, verbally and in written reports.
• Flexibility, including a willingness to travel will be an advantage.
