The role

An opportunity has arisen for a Chargehand position to join the Major Projects, Rail Operations Team that provides safety critical support to the business on various sites throughout the UK. The role will initially be based on the East West Rail Alliance project.

Key accountabilities

• Responsible to lead and direct gang(s) of men in a safe manner on all VolkerRail sites in the absence of a foreman.
• Be aware of the company safety policy and undertake works in a safe manner.
• Ensure safe systems of work are set up on site and adequate resources are provided for the safe system and to carry out the work.
• Ensure track components are put together correctly and report any defects.
• Ensure safe use of tools and powered plant with appropriate PPE.
• Responsible for daily reporting from site in the absence of a foreman or supervisor.
• Ensure site noise is kept to a minimum and keep sites clean and tidy.
• Ensure all staff are briefed on the safe system and the work scope before entering on the site.
• Ensure COSS briefings are robustly carried out and recorded in log book(s) and copies are made available to Foreman.
• Ensure tools and equipment are correctly stored and returned from site with any defects highlighted.
• To be fully conversant with all materials and platelaying competencies.
• To alert Senior Management to any non-conformance or deficiency in quality, materials, services or workmanship.
• Liaison and communication with VolkerRail staff and contractors plus all relevant external contacts as required in order to discharge the duties and responsibilities of this JD.SRS.

The discharge of these safety critical duties and responsibilities within this JD/SRS and any other safety critical competencies are mandatory upon the post holder.

Location

The position will be nationally based and will require travel both locally and nationally including some requirements to stay away from home when necessary. The role will initially be based between Milton Keynes and Bletchley.
