About us

Snowdon Mountain Railway (SMR) or “Rheilfordd yr Wyddfa” as it is known in Welsh was opened in 1896 to carry tourists to the summit of Snowdon. It is a line of sight, single line, rack and pinion railway covering a distance of 4 miles and 1188 yards, with a number of trackside buildings, cuttings, bridges and viaducts along with 4 passing loops at Hebron, Halfway, Clogwyn and Summit stations. The line climbs from 341 feet above sea level at Llanberis to the Summit Station at 3493 feet above sea level; this is a climb of 3152 feet, giving an average gradient of 1 in 7.86 with the steepest gradient being 1 in 5.5. SMR is privately owned under Heritage Great Britain (HGB) who own and operate a variety of heritage sites within the UK.

About you

We're looking for a rail infrastructure engineer/manager with curiosity, personal drive and technical knowhow.

Key Duties:

• To work both independently and as part of the railway maintenance and operations department
• Interpretation of structural and mechanical designs into working solutions
• Liaise with colleagues to determine engineering solutions to problems
• Liaise with clients, their representatives, consultants, suppliers and sub-contractors in respect of the production of engineering drawings, specifications, work instructions and problem solving
• To be a single point of contact for all infrastructure and track works under his/her control from start to final completion
• Actively communicate as required with senior management on all aspects of outstanding works and ongoing issues
• The control and monitoring of planned works to maximise effectiveness and efficiency
• Participation in the planning and programming of resources to meet the requirements of the allocated works
• Monitor the progress of the works and ensure that the development, design, construction and financial targets are met
• To identify, program and resource legislative inspections to meet ORR and HSE requirements
• Ensuring all activities are done in accordance with all relevant Company procedures, Health & Safety legislation & all other generic industry technical safety standards
• Undertake rostered duty manager responsibilities

Applicants must have the following qualifications, attributes and skills -

Essential

• Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Engineering, at 2.1 or above
• Experience in railway infrastructure with a track bias
• Possess a strong working knowledge of Office, particularly excel and demonstrate an ability to learn new software within a working environment
• Enthusiasm for a career in Rail, underpinned by a knowledge and understanding of our sector and work
• Have an analytical thought process and the ability to communicate effectively to the required personnel
• Seek to improve existing ways of working, by finding efficiencies in processes
• The aptitude to work on your own initiative and be proactive in team building
• Customer care experience as a duty manager

Desirable

• Membership of a relevant engineering professional institution e.g. Permanent Way Institution (PWI), Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) etc.
• A sound knowledge of technical, safety and performance standards relating to track
• Experience in design, installation and maintenance
• Formal qualifications in risk identification and assessment
• Minimum H&S qualification up to IOSH level
